Unexplained increased map load times

I'm having a wierd problem with BF2 related to map loading time, specifically the "verifying client data" portion. I generally play with the same few guys all the time, and we use Ventrilo so we can talk outside of the game. So we would always compare who got in the map when, and I used to load fairly quickly, getting in the map before a few others. Nowadays, my load time is rediculously slow. Even the slowest guy is getting in the map faster than me. It takes so long I have time to get up and pee, get a beer, do the wife (and finish), and get back to the pc before I'm ingame. Literally, it takes four or five times longer than it used to. I had made no changes to my system that would cause something like this to happen.

I have no explanation for this change in performance. I have tried:

-reloading all drivers
-reinstalling bf2
-running all system checks (spyware, av, etc.)
-defreagging all drives
-eliminating unwanted background programs

This change started before the 1.03 patch, so I can't bame that.

System specs:

A64 3200+
1GB Crucial pc3200
MSI K8N
MSI RX9800XT 128MB
Maxtor 200GB IDE ATA133 8MB

Any ideas as to what might be causing this?

Hmm.. changed anything in your network setup?? Just guessing, I don't actually know how the whole loading thing works, but I'd imagine it does some CRC checking and verifies it against the server.. that could explain a change.

Otherwise, I'd suggest a defrag - but you've already done that.

Same thing happened to me. I figure its my hard drive just getting old. shrug.

Yes. I've gone from a M$ b router to a Belkin Pre-N, but the timing of that change isn't coincidental with this problem.

client data verification might be downloading something on to your computer and leaving it there. check to see what your directory sizes are like before and after. i'd look at the my documents porition as well as the program files.

my verifying time is always quite long. i figured it was net connection, but youre saying it may be my HDD? it is quite old.....

who's saying that royal?

i actually do think my hd may be suspect here, for various reasons. for the most part it seems fine, but for grins a ran ATTO on it and it only got as high as 7mb/s transfer rate, which i think is poor. looks like i might need some more hd diagnostics.

oh and pacha, i recall looking through the BF2 directories and seeing one with what seemed like hundreds of files with very long names, over and over. i can't recall what it was right now (at work), but i'll see if i can find it tonight. it just looked as though it was a directory that was getting written to over and over. but if this was the case, and it caused my problem, i would think everyone would have the same complaint.

Deleting the cached files in My Documents and letting them be recreated on next load sped things up (after the first loading of a map) for me. Just be sure not to delete your screens or profiles. Trimming your page file down and defragging it helps a bit too.

deleting cached files helped, but not as much as changing my hd settings from multi-word2 to udma6 and enabling write caching. DOH!
