I, like many people out there, were looking forward to one specific game this year. S.T.A.L.K.E.R. However, as you all know it has been pushed back, and pushed back. And Isn't expected until sometime next year. So, what the hell is going on?? Well that is what was pretty much asked of the Developers earlier in the week and here is their response.

Where do we stand?

As of today we are working on the game's storyline. After conclusively play-testing the first version, we came to the conclusion that the result was below-par and didn't live up to our own expectations and high standards. As a result we undertook a broad review of the story and key design areas of the game, looking particularly at the interaction of the plot with the life simulation.

Once key areas were identified we were able to work on filling out the content of the game world and being the process of polishing and balancing. At the same time, we are working hard to refine the AI, life simulation, the PDA interactivity, bug fixing and optimising the game to run on lower-spec machines. The 'eye candy' is also getting a major overhaul

What has been achieved to-date?

Now that the game components have been put together we are pleased to be able to say that we have some thrilling gameplay - the key thing! Once we acknowledged that the project was going to deliver a first person title quite unlike any other, we were able to look towards refining and balancing the gameplay. On top of that we are continuing to receive great support and feedback from our Publisher, and we've been able to use their extensive knowledge and familiarity with the market to ensure that we have a truly unique and compelling gameplay experience.

The game itself is different from anything else out there, in particularly the life simulation and open-world gameplay mechanics. This has proven to be very time-consuming to polish and debug - a major headache for us! We especially wanted newbies to be able to pick up and play the game, meaning that accessibility became paramount in the design. While we have been able to retain the depth and feel of the game, we feel that by making maximum use of the in-game PDA, we will be able to ensure that at no point do people feel that they are lost or directionless.

We have also continued to work on the AI in the game and we're particularly happy with the way our stalkers react to one another and to other stalkers; while they're certainly challenging to attack, they don't actually 'cheat', but react according to their situation and make decisions depending on the player's actions. Once you understand that the underlying AI reflects true-life situations then the combat becomes all the more engaging, realising that a simple mistake could be the end of you brings a real intensity to the action! We have also been working hard to make sure that the life of the other AI stalkers in the game is just as engaging as your own; they talk, tell jokes, drink, sleep, etc. The community has been particularly useful in this context; they have supplied all the jokes and stories that the stalkers tell while relaxing around a campfire.

So to cut through the crap and waffle, basically its not done. Their Storyline sucked ass and really didn't match up to their media hype or their intentions once it was actually put into the engine. So they are re-doing alot of it. Under the surface there are a few references to the AI and the Environment. So its probably safe to say that as they have the most ambitious goals of any game pretty much ever made, that it is currently more then a little short of complete.
So what positives can we take away from the fact one of the best games ever envisaged is currently in a holding pattern, with serious engine and storyline issues? It is NOT being published by VUG or EA. If it was it would have been pushed out the door, and currently fill the role of "coffee coaster" on all of our desks. So it is great that THQ are being so liberal with the patience for GSC to allow them to complete the game. It is truly a virtue in short supply these days.

well, from what i read before...
* they have changed their engine 2 or 3 times
* those 2 or 3 times they would basically start over
* the game could have been released many times, but since they (devs) dont like it, they're putting it off
* THQ almost did kill their funding, since game been in production since 2001 or something, and nothing came out of it. But since so many people are talking about it, i guess they decided to see what will happen
* last i hear, it should have been out in september
* AND (i still dont get it), if you check out the Russian version of the site, u'll see these 3 awards

1st one is Best Tech award
2nd is Best Graphics
and 3rd is Best Game of the Year. I always thought they give 'these' kinds of awards AFTER game comes out, but while in russia, i was told its still not out.

just my 2 cents

I borrowed FF7 for PC from a friend yesterday. On the back it has a list of games "coming soon". There's a little Daikatana logo with the catchphrase "Believe the hype" underneath it.

I hope we're not in for a repeat of history here.

Daikatana never had anything that got me interested... It was never bringing anything new to the table. Stalker does. Or has it planned.. It could fail to deliever, but it does have some nice stuff proposed.

Totally agree with Beren there. And i figure that even if S.T.A.L.K.E.R does suck, then at least it brought up these new (well kinda) ideas to the table. so if not now, maybe they will be realised some time in the future, in some other game...
Also, dont put to much faith in a developer whose previous titles are pretty much limited to Cossacks.
Still hope it rocks though.
