In a short message on the AC2 website, Jeffrey Anderson stated that Turbine plan to bring Asheron's Call 2 to a close at the end of the year

Dear AC2 subscribers,

In spite of our hard work and the launch of Legions, AC2 has reached the point where it no longer makes sense to continue the service. We will be officially closing the Asheron's Call 2 service on 12/30/05. Until then, we plan to run live events, but we will not be adding any content or features.

We deeply appreciate the many dedicated fans of AC2 who have stood by us over the years. You have our sincerest gratitude.

Can't say that I'm really suprised. Probably more suprised that people are still playing it.

AC2 was too much of a drastic departure from what made Asheron's Call great. I was deeply involved in AC1, just eating up the game, anything that Turbine could throw at us. AC2 beta rolls around, and I find a totally different game... Beautiful for its time, but dumbed down, limited, without the charm of its predecessor. Roamed around a bit, then went back to AC1. I imagine most people did the same.

I tried it again when the free trial came out, and still did not find it endearing in the least. It's still a shock when MMORPGs die, but this one does not surprise anyone.

I just quit last night since playing from beta. I liked the stripped down game. Towards the end they made some good advancements toward an elder game but it was too little too late.

I never played the game but it would be nice of them to open source the server code and release to the community should they choose to continue the game without official support.
