Got Haggis?

The New York Times is running an <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2005/08/08/technology/08game.html?oref=login">article</a> (registration required) reporting on the trend of publishers relying on sequels.
<blockquote>
By year's end, Electronic Arts plans to release 26 new games, all but one of them a sequel, including the 16th version of N.H.L. Hockey, the 11th of the racing game Need for Speed and the 13th of the P.G.A. Tour golf game. The company also relies heavily on creating games based on movies like the James Bond and Lord of the Rings series, rather than developing original brands.

I've read several articles this month about this. Guess the number of games that have broken the top 10 in 2004 that were not sequels? 0. Yeah, that's right, zero. 1 has broken the top 20, and that was Fable. I believe there were 4 non-sequels to break the top 100. That is just pathetic. Of course, I'm guilty myself of wanting proper sequels of good games (Tribes 3 anyone?), but it really does seem like the game industry is running out of ideas (Godfather + Scarface are two releases on the horizon).
