I'm not very good yet, but I usually raise pre-flop on an Ace Jack - if anything, it narrows the field a little. Is that wrong?

You can raise with AJo from positions 6-7 depending on situation, and from 8-button definately, provided there are no other raises before you.

Raising from early position, think about the possible hands that will call you...AK, AQ, or any pocket pair over 6s is going to call...and all of those hands has you beat. There are 169 starting hands, and 16 of them have you beat (13 pocket pairs, ak, aq, and aj suited). There are very few hands would call you that you dominate (KJ or QJ might call you by a crappy player). If you raise with AJ UTG or one off, there are 8-9 players left to act, all who have a 10% chance of having you beat, so you are raising in a situation where 80-90% of the time you are behind, and 25% or so of the time you are WAY behind.

AJ is a hand you definately push with in late position or at a shorter table.

edit this is in response to the AJ question, havent had a chance to look at your hand yet

Don't listen to the clowns telling you to raise preflop from EP with AJo.

I think you need to raise more on the flop (to 8 or 10) to possibly to thin the field and gain information. If both come along with you and the turn bricks I'd probably fold to any substantial turn bet.

Without good reads I like the turn bet and the check-fold on the river.

Then again it's Party and I could easily see some donk playing the ace of clubs or kings of clubs that way.

in this situation, I would probably limp in with AJ, but you have to be able to lay this down with a scary flop like that...if you are limping, expect anyone with paint to limp...and also jackasses who play any A...so with this flop you are facing idiots who have hit their flush with 4c6c or are playing Ac4d and have nut flush draw...always remember at this cash level...when you think"there is no way ANYONE could be playing this", you're wrong. Save your money for when you know you have someone.

I play ring games a little different than a tourney...in a ring game, you have all night to get your money into a pot. I'd rather do it when I'm ahead 3 or 4 to 1, not in a toss up situation (which is basically how I think you perceive is your best case scenario here, you have top pair/top kicker vs. flush draw..worst case is you may have top pair/top kicker vs. made hand already)

your not supposed to play every ace you get.......:)

he also said "i cant believe that worked" right after the hand was over, leading me to believe he had me beat

Why would this lead you to believe he had you beat? Sounds like he was bluffing and was suprised you actually folded.

raise the size of the pot on the flop (raise to $8) Might be only $2 more, but it makes just smooth calling less of an option and you might get out for less money against a better hand.

Ignore people saying you should raise Ajo, that might be a good strategy in a tournaments with the blinds high, but in cash games it gets you in trouble.

The most likely holdings are for someone who completed a straight on the turn, or maybe he had a high flush card, then backed into trip 6's

I think it's almost a mandatory fold here. Unless youve seen this guy bluffing the river like this, you should give him respect. This isn't the kind of board a good player capable of bluffing like that would choose.
