I mean, sure you can expand it to include the gaming communities but we all know that isn't a universal truth.

So, it is purely to have a dependable place to play games for the enjoyment of a particular limited group of people? I think that's probably right.

There are other areas that intersect or enhance those goals. For instance, there are servers hosted by competitive gaming clans:

1. Encouraging good gamers to play there against or along side clan members in order to develop a more competitive team.
2. Hosting team practices.
3. Beta testing strategies against a live ad hoc group.
4. FOURSTAR also points out that it is advertising for good players to be scouted and assimilated.

There is also an element of philanthropy to it as well, in that people might be hosting servers to provide a particular environment to a particular audience. The return for this investment is a limited edition set of warm fuzzies.

As near as I can tell, there is no case where the provision of public servers is not self serving in some way or another. One should not be surprised when those interests are fiercely protected to the extent that it generates 32 pages of bickering and territoriality combined with hamfisted spin doctoring.
