Amadeus 04-13-2005, 12:51 PM DISCLAIMER: There are no plans to include a grappling hook in Legends base. What I do is merely an experiment, but once completed, I am willing to hand it over to any mod teams interested (this includes RenWerX, GTW and everyone else who's working with TGE).
With that said, I can't finish the thing until the next build of Legends is released due to technical reasons. So, I figured I might ask y'all what you'd like to see in a grappling hook.
Current features:
Non-elastic physics prevent gaining speed by grappling only
Reeling in by holding down the fire button. Can be repeated indefinately (although you'll run out of rope after a while)
Ammo count of 8 (likely to be decreased to 5)
Projectile inherits half of your velocity to make high speed grappling harder
Destroyable hook
Line breaks under too much tension, when it hits a solid object or when the hook is destroyed
Higher refire delay after breaking the line
Easily configurable reel-in strength and rope strength (both in terms of max pull power and max tension)
Other settings configurable from in-game
Is there anything I missed? Are there any more ways to balance the grappler as a weapon? (Note that recoding it as a pack will probably be the last thing I do). What would you add to the above list?
Pachacutec 04-13-2005, 12:55 PM please construct your code in a way that is easy to integrate with the other 20 TGE tribes projects, thx
Amadeus 04-13-2005, 01:27 PM Well, most of it is just vector math, so I guess that's done. :)
KillerONE 04-13-2005, 01:28 PM If you read the DISCLAIMER...
Not sure where this would be in the code, but the ability to DISABLE the grapple from use in certain gametypes.
Other than that, I don't really care.
:)
Amadeus 04-13-2005, 01:35 PM I could do it, but this sounds something that may be better handled on the gametype side.
Geiss 04-13-2005, 01:48 PM no grapple in legends plz. bring back shocklance.
Pachacutec 04-13-2005, 01:56 PM and mine disc, god i miss the mine disc :(
NoFiX 04-13-2005, 02:00 PM Here's an idea, implement a sling-shot type weapon. It latches, but for a second, then whisks you off in some direction.
Wouldn't be a grapple, but you could pull some really fun / crazy shit off I suspect...

i wanted the push-gun from minority report, i could see people firing off of each other...

Ahh, that's a good idea too...
Those two tools, could be tools(like laser), would make the game hella interesting.
as long as its not in base i dont mind, the grapple is a great tool as far as T:V goes, but when u try to go back to T1/T2 its hard to play without it, it made capping too ez as long as u learned how to grapple but it 'dumbed down' capping in general.
Amadeus 04-13-2005, 02:36 PM Well, the point of me making this is to see if having a grappling hook always equals dumbed down movement and imbalances.

Also, how does that push-gun work? Does it just fire a projectile that pushes people in its direction? Or is it instahit?
KnightMare 04-13-2005, 02:41 PM your grappling hook sounds useless

That would be a good thing, as it would mean that I've just gone overboeard with the balancing and there's most likely a happy inbetween. Messing around on some maps though, I still have my doubts that it won't dominate the field. Gotta wait until I can playtest with others.

Nah, more like a shock-blast that pushes things/people around, afaik their wasn't a visible projectile to this.

I don't think the Grappler would have such an effect on gametypes that's purpose is speed/manueverability.
For example, a gametype like Siege the use of the grappler is a TOOL, not a deciding factor. While in CTF, the Grappler can win based soley on it's use.
I never really had a problem with the Grappler. It's fun and has it's uses. I just don't think it has a place in CTF for various balance reasons.

The impulse gun (yeah, I suck with names) just creates an impulse radius at the center of impact. Anyone in the radius will be push away, including the origin player. This can also be used to "impulse jump", but it does take quite a lot of energy.
Zeonism 04-13-2005, 03:06 PM I doubt the grappler would/could be used alot on the maps in Legends.
Most of the maps are dominated by open terrain.
You could ofcourse use it in standoffs, to swing around in circles with the flag...
The push gun sounds usefull tho.
Could be usefull to give your capper a boost and such
It should have a reversed effect..for example if you're standing still and trying to push an incomming highspeed capper(front), he shouldnt go backwards, you should :x
Do it from the side and he's pushed to the side...well idk.

That's exactly what I'm trying to eliminate. Of course, a tool that enchances movement doesn't do much in gametypes where the focus isn't on movement, but I don't think it's necessairily overpowering in gametypes like CTF or rabbit. Once I get to test it with someone, I'm going to see how changing certain properties influences its use.
{RiP}Zarious 04-13-2005, 04:03 PM I'm sure some one else has suggested this, but don't allow the grappler to attach to terrain. Buildings, rocks, trees, ect, just not terrain. Would take 60% of the gayness out of it right there.
