DreamcastJunkie 04-12-2005, 04:07 PM The guy that made the "Tribes likes/dislikes" thread asked us not to argue opinions on that thread, so I'm going to try (and fail) to redirect some traffic here to keep arguments off that thread.
1. Taunts- poor sportsmanship, or just plain fun?
2. Backcaps- annoying tactic, or brilliant game design?
3. Vehicles- love em, hate em, wish the Tribals had better rockets?
4. Exploits- (Am I just that stupid?) Do flying vehicles and absurd speeds make the game more fun?
5. Base rape and Spawn Killing- Who's the real noob? The defenders who can't stop the attackers, or the attackers who won't stop spamming mortars?
Here's looking forward to all of one response.
poisonspider 04-12-2005, 04:11 PM Disclaimer: I'm retarded.
Yes.
Amadeus 04-12-2005, 04:18 PM 1. Poor sportsmanship when abused. Since there's nothing really that would prevent anything from abusing them, I'd rather keep them out of the game.
2. Poor map design mostly.
3. I've got nothing wrong with them until they aren't overpowered.
4. If the game stays balanced that way, then they could. Remember, the difference between exploit and creativity is very small.
5. Depends on the map design for the most part. If one team can't defend a single entrance then they should probably wonder about their skills for a bit.
dudeman 04-12-2005, 04:20 PM 1. Taunts- fun, not spamming though
3. Vehicles- keyword: balance. t1 did it right... a vehicle should not be as if you are suddenly holding 4 guns and moving much faster. It needs to have weight, serve as transportation foremost, and if it has weapons they have to require some brains/charge up/and have balanced limitations.
4. Exploits- I'm against players finding something bizarre and almost cheatish then forcing it to be accepted. If it's something not too far off common sense but simply unintended, then it's up to devs how to handle it.
5. Base rape and Spawn Killing- Such is life. Fight back.
KnightMare 04-12-2005, 04:32 PM 1.its called mute
2.they rock
3.if they're poorly made they shouldnt be shipped with the game
4.depends, some make the game better and im not just talking about skiing
5.t2's spawn zones stopped the sprid like spawn killing, why this wasnt added to tv is beyond me.
Starwind 04-12-2005, 04:56 PM why this wasnt added to tv is beyond me.
It just kills me that everthing T2 actually did right wasnt carried over to T:V different engine or not.

As well as T1.
SS: Tribes and Tribes 2 were great games. Designed (imo) very well. Awesome features, some that needed polish, but overall headed in the right direction.
I realize T:V was trying to make a NEW game with an effort to bring in the masses. In theory it sounds good, but in application it obviously didn't work.
They could of easily taken the best of each and created a super duper Tribes. Complete with the slower paced large battles of Tribes 2 and fast and furious CTF of Tribes 1.
But, would this have only carried over the previous Tribes players and not the new ones? Nope, it would have had just as if not better chance than T:V. Single Player would have still been there, so players still would have learned how to play. Multiplayer would have been awesome since it was based on two quality and proven MP games (T1/T2). Veterans would have been happy encouraging new players. Fostering, HAPPY community. Motivated mappers, scripters, etc.
It's still debatable that the Tribes series is even something that HAS mass appeal. No matter how you slice it, Tribes is vastly different than your average FPS. Spin it 3 ways to Sunday, Tribes just isn't for everyone. Nothing can change that.
That in mind, when a Tribes project is in development, it should be budgeted with that in mind.
In closing, Tribes should have never strayed from the original formula. Why they thought 3 different Tribes games was the way to go is beyond me. Take the original formula and expound on it. Add options/features/polish. Create new and interesting ways to play. But keep what worked, in.
IvoryKebab 04-12-2005, 07:53 PM HOW MANY NEW THREADS OF THE SAME SHIT DO WE NEED TO HAVE??
Zustiur 04-12-2005, 09:20 PM 1. Taunts- I ilke them, but would like to see an auto mute feature built in to the game. Just something to prevent playing the same sound twice in one or two seconds.
2. Backcaps- Brilliant. Annoying, but there are ways to counter them. And some maps are just hard. :)
3. Vehicles- t1's vehicles needed improving. t2's vehicles... well the shrike needed to be toned down (by about 10%), and the havoc was just crap. Bomber was ok. Tank was too tough. T:V... Utter crap. Rover is the best design, but I'm not too fond of moving spawn points. Vehicle should have to be stationary or something.
4. Exploits- Hey, I even like air mines from T1.
5. Base rape and Spawn Killing- Who's the real noob? T2C had it about right, with the invulnerability and well scattered spawn locations. T:V wouldn't be so bad if the invulnterability worked.

NoFiX 04-12-2005, 09:29 PM What in the holy fuck-fuck is wrong with back-caps?
KillerONE 04-12-2005, 10:11 PM What in the holy fuck-fuck is wrong with back-caps?
They become almost a gauranteed cap?
They limit or some cases create non-existent chasing?
Both of which aren't fun, imo.
I mean, back caps are fine when the LD can participate in the chase. But there's no way in hell an LD is gonna catch a capper that prepared a 400m OOB cap route that gets them 300kph plus.
Yes I know about the body-blocking/minedisking/sniping/chaining/[insert your l33t skill here] that prevents some of the back caps. It's just something I dislike.
When I LD and I don't happen to be in bodyblocking position or dont' have a sniper rifle or whatever and I see the grab, then 2 seconds later cap before I can even get half way across the map, I dislike that. No chase, no hunt, no flag scramble, no escorting, no flag passing, etc.
I'm not saying there should never be an instance that back capping wouldn't be effective, I'm just saying that capping in a manner that removes the joy of what CTF is all about (to me, remember this is a personal preference) is something I wouldn't mind seeing mostly eliminated if not removed.
Zustiur 04-13-2005, 01:54 AM Aye, back capping can be bad like that, but you have to remember that the cappers are spending a lot of time travelling in order to achieve that.
In the end it comes down to map design for this issue.

|ASS|Frogger 04-13-2005, 02:12 PM Taunts:
1) I'd like to be able to dissable playing/displaying everything from the "taunt" tree of the voice-chat options. Dissabling it should also disable your ability to taunt.
2) 1 kill/cap, 1 taunt is fine. STFU until you DO something. The nice thing about having admin is being able to boot the gabbers. Last night on |ASS| North Coast some guy was spamming it up, but he was also single-handedly wiping out two or three opponents from my tribe- getting far more kills and caps than voice-chats- so out of resepct for his 1337ness we let him gloat.
3) If you have more than 2 non-team voice-chats in a row, you should be kicked for flooding. I don't have space on my screen for a 10-line chat window so I can find the usefull info scattered among some idiot's macro spam.
edit: Holy WTF- when did I become a "Veteren"? Guess I'll have to stop dissing Vet elitism and start my posts with "STFU, member." :hrm:
KillerONE 04-13-2005, 03:34 PM You became a veteran on

Welcome.
Flame_Dude 04-13-2005, 04:36 PM I love the T2 vehicles. They can be useless if you have no idea what you're doing, but considered overpowered if you master them. Vehicles add a whole new demension to the game, and make it seem larger scale.
Also, I don't think back caps are a problem in Base (t2), vgta Classic players.

T2 vehicles have been something that I have never found useless, even in my initial grand newbieness. Unfortunately, their balancer, the missile launcher, is a pain in the neck for infantry (hello, flares). This could easily be fixed.
At that, the "new dimension" was added with jetpacks, vehicles simply serve to extend that.
eMOxygen 04-13-2005, 04:51 PM 1. Taunts- plain fun
2. Backcaps- brilliant tactic
3. Vehicles- Teams don't use them enough (T:V)
4. Exploits- Cheats bad, bending the matrix good.
5. Base rape and Spawn Killing- Yes, I will rape you. Hard and won't stop. It's my job. I'm HO. Deal with it. Only if 8v8 or some asshat rapes first with less players.
