Constant File Corruption (Bad CRC Checks)

...just asking around and have done some research on the net, but really haven't turned up with much. So I come to TW alas!

Recently (for about 4 months now), whenever I download anything and try to extract it (usually being a compressed file of some sort: .zip, .rar or even somtimes an .exe), I'll encounter a "Data Corrupt" error and have bad CRC checks constantly. The funny thing is if I don't mess with my computer WHILE it's extracting the file it has a better chance of successfully being extracted w/out a bad CRC check; pretty odd, I know.

I've read on several other forums and google'd links that this could be something to do with a defective network card, so I've gone ahead and replaced that, but still no luck. The only thing I can think of being my problem is having faulty memory, which seems highly unlikely considering the RAM I've got now is brand new (ordered from Newegg; Corsair XMS DDR).

If it is the RAM though I wouldn't be suprised because I've also been experiencing a lot of "Memory Reference" errors such as:

The instruction at 00524f1e referenced memory at f6de433a. The memory could not be written.

Will MemTest86 tell me if my RAM is actually faulty or if it's just configured incorrectly?

You can't really "configure" RAM. Memtest will test the Ram by running it through cycles and that should tell you if the Ram is bad. New RAM can be bad too. Sounds like bad RAM to me though...

Yep, that was it... gonna have to get it replaced.

corsair should have a lifetime warranty and if it's fairly recent newegg should be willing to replace too

Yep, gonna run an RMA as soon as possible. :bigthumb:

Hmm, installed some new RAM while my RMA goes through... and it seems that certain stuff I couldn't do before still isn't working. For example, I'm trying to apply a patch to WoW and it's telling me a certain file is corrupt. Would I need to reinstall the game entirely with non-faulty RAM? Or is there something bigger wrong here?

I'm also trying to install this demo for some game and it still stops at the same point of installation and tells me that there's a corrupt file within the setup.exe... I tried re-downloading the file and still, same error.

I ran MemTest86 with my old RAM and it did come up bad, ran MemTest86 again with this new RAM and no errors, yet I'm getting weird oddities with shit in Windows still.

virus scan?

I did recently... downloading new virus sigs and scanning entire computer now.

(I use eTrust EZ Antivirus.)

The old RAM was definitely screwed up, but this corrupt data crap is getting old.... if it is a virus and isn't being detected, I'm just gonna format.

edit:

No viruses detected.

might be corrupt system files because of old ram? Do a repair intsall for winxp and see if that fixes the problem.
