You guys all keep ranting about how T2's "depth" is what made it such a great game, and how T:V's "dumbed down" focus on action is what sucks about it. So real quick, I want one little thing explained to me, just out of curiosity.

Why did Unreal Tournament outsell Tribes 2?

Why is "Will and Grace" more highly rated than "Arrested Development"

it sold more cause there are more kids with short attention spans out there than team oriented players

the entire goal of TV was to have a "dumb down" tribes game to sell like unreal.

Is it because the majority of people are closet homosexuals?

"Why did Unreal Tournament outsell Tribes 2?"

I think Tribes is looked upon as a "kids" game because of the T rating. Without the blood and gore, maybe it lacks the "grown up" image this generation of gamers seems to require.

Every Tribes game in the series is considered "hard to play" by new players. Spawn and go are the normal FPS games of today. These guys are used to running over weapons hanging in mid air, not inv. stations.

Tribes players look like Rock'em Sock 'em robots. Most FPS gamers seem to prefer player skins that are a little easier to relate to, even in futuristic games. More human the better.

Don't get my post wrong. I like this game, and play it often. I don't think T:V lacks depth or gameplay, just needs a few things repaired.

This is one of the reasons I prefer Tribes/Tribes 2 graphics and models. Even on the Torque engine I felt the game had a lot better sense of realism than Vengeace currently has.

It's been proven time and time again that exposure is vastly more important than quality when it comes to sales. Tribes could be the second coming of christ and Quake could be a 2D game with pixels for characters and it would still make better sales.

Advertising = Sales.
Quality != Sales.

To allow me to commit the worst debating action known to man and answer your question with a question:

Why is McDonalds the worlds most popular resturant franchise?

Simply put; fast and easy products with little substance or neutritional/intelectual value appeal to the masses.

This doesn't make it "good".

UT sold more then T2 because it was easy, quick and fun to play just like CS, plus it had big funds and professional gaming developers who could focus on what counted. Not many people want to spend countless hours going over routes, practice, and group coordination stuff. They knew that it was an easy, quick, fun game that anyone could pickup and play while they wait for there school bus to get home. When a regular person looks at tribes. "Holy shazbot this is hard" Tribes was too ahead of it's time if you ask me. The concept of tribes is effing awsome but gaming is just now becoming a sport worth watching. Back in the day's it was not. If only Tribes was born today =(

Oh and...
About the "too ahead of it's time" thing. If it is one game that really seperated Regular First Person Shooters to the next level without too much change, it's Battlefield. They combined great Land and Air combat essentials yet still easy to get ahold of. Tribes was just too big of a leap from FPS Ground to Air. I love this game and I hope in 7-8 years the idea of this game will be resurrected.

Why did Unreal Tournament outsell Tribes 2?

Because it's easier to buld 4- or 5-players team than 30- 40-players team?

Because UT99 is relatively easy?

Because it's easier to increase your individual skill than the ability to cooperate in huge teams?

Because UT99 had no authorization and 60-70% of players were thiefs?

Enough?

well, i think it may be for the same reason CS is still popular to this day; a LOT of casual gamers don't feel so impelled, or just don't have the funds, to keep up with the hasty computing and gaming industry. Over any amount of time, games are bound to get new players. But difference between Tribes versus UT or CS is that many people stayed with those games because no one updates.

I know that doesn't answer it all, but its a good theory as to why these games continue to have a large playerbase. Another reason why those games are more popular is because Tribes has always been a Type B game, whilst others have been Type A. I've read an interesting article on this online, if I can retrieve the URL I'll post it up.

You have to admit, a lot more players actually know about UT or CS as appealed to Tribes, regardless of their opinion on the game, many people KNOW that such a thing as CS and UT exist. Tribes has always been underground.

man..how many times does one have to point out that NO TRIBES GAMES has had a big market compaign! It wasnt the marketing for Tribes that caused the low player count or it would have been the exact same for the first 2 titles. There are A LOT of games that dont have heavy marketing but sell very very well through similair marketing that T:V had (limit ads in gaming mags, internet and word of mouth) because of great word of mouth and a great product. If you have a truely great game...that will equal sales (or at least better sales)...I assure you. This game had a built in base audience if it wanted it...word of mouth was everywhere (more than for T2 IMO) and people were waiting for this game for a long time with a lot of info being released. When it came out it lost a bunch of the hardcore base and didnt seem to draw a bunch of NEW players. Trust me, marketing didnt hurt this game much. Bad word of mouth, loss of much of the rabid players who have been playing Tribes for years and years, and just a general disappointment hurt this game.

Because Tribes is for PC gamers. UTK2004 and TV are more oriented to console gamers. PC games or the PC variant of a game are always more indepth than console games.

consoles are analagous to AOL internet users. A large majority of people use AOL to get online because thats all they know. Im sure youre a more advanced user and dont use AOL. Right?

Also Unreal has the commercial name of Unreal which was originally a big challenger to Quake. Unreal has its original developers backing it up with Epic. Doom amd Quake have ID, HF2 has Valve. Without Dynamix Tribes is like an orphaned child in the hands of VU and folks that really dont know much about the lineage or gameplay in tribes. TV's MP is a good example of that.
