[T:V] Permanent Automated Turrets?

Has anyone made any headway in this area? I thought it might be possible to expand the DeployedTurret class and override the destroy() function but all of my attempts have failed. The farthest I got was adding the modified turret in a map but it seems the destroy() function is never called.

is there no way to set the manned turrets to auto?

would make more sense if the large turrets where auto until someone walked up and got into it.
