Dell Machine
Win XP
1.8GHz
512MB DDR RAM
ATi 9600xt AIW
Primary Master-40GB: Maxtor 6L040J2
Primary Slave-160GB: Maxtor 6Y160P0

Currently my slave drive is being seen as 31.4 GB instead of 160GB.
I've applied the <137GB patch from the maxtor site, but that didn't help.
BIOS also sees the drive as 31.4GB.
Here's a screenshot (http://img39.exs.cx/my.php?loc=img39&image=diskmanagment.gif) of Disk Managment in case it's helpful.

jumpers are set wrong, there is a cap limit on the jumpers of the drive that need to be changed.

Also up date the bios and make sure it supports 48bit IDE or you wont get over 137gb with it.

The HD used to work just fine.
I had to reinstall WinXP on my C: drive. After I did that I went to look in F: it said "This drive needs to be formated". I acually needed to format it so I went and ahead with the format. After the reboot i have my current problem. :/

then make sure you have SP1 installed on XP, as it doesnt support 48-bit IDE unless you have SP1 or 2 installed.

there's no way your format would affect your BIOS detecting your drive's capacity. go check your jumpers or whatever else you messed around with.

I have service pack 1 installed. I don't want to get SP2 because it caused probelms which resulted in the reinstalliation of XP. I haven't touched the jumpers at all. They are the same as when the HD was functioning properly.

Summary of events:
-Reinstall WinXP(formats C: )
-Update windows (service pack1 installed)
-Download and run Maxtors big drive enabler
-Find that F: isn't readable
-Format F:
-Find F: is only 31.4 GB

did your bios always detect it as 31.4? upgrade your bios

I had that happen to me. It probably is that the partition for the hard drive is only 137gb. Get partition magic and it can open up the rest. Worked for me.

partition size DOES NOT AFFECT how the bios detects the hd.
