BT: Before Tribes

Well, I've known since the first game that StarSiege: Tribes was probably not the first game in the Starsiege series. So, after I came across this page... http://www.starsiegeuniverse.com/timeline/fulltimeline.php ... I decided that I should bone up on my history. I was quite amased to find that the first game was actually made for DOS. Now, since Tribes 1 and 2 have been released as free, and the insanly low prices on ebay and such, I figured there wouldn't be many objections to trying to find the origional EarthSiege 1 and 2, and StarSiege. StarSiege has some intresting cutscenes, as I have seen the three provided by the the site above, and I have hopes that it has more. Anyway, does anyone happen to know of a good place to find these relics to the past? Is it still too soon to try to get a free ride with these things? As an apiring video game programmer, I know the pride one takes in their work, and I don't want to try to cheat them out of money, but it has been quite a number of years... Has anyone even played these games? Are they any good? Well, better stop babbling...

I have the original starseige for PC. It's not difficult to get a hold of. It's a pretty good game. Pretty much like MechWarrior, but on Mars. You control different mechs, customize and create your own personal battlemachine while you fight other groups and another race for control of mars. Gameplay can be pretty slow at times. Multiplayer was awesome.

Dynamix tried to tie in just about every game they ever made. If you look close at that timeline, you'll see Steller 7 on it! I remeber playing that on my old Apple 2e! (woot for vector graphics!)

Funny thing, tho. Thrax needed to be beaten about the head with that site. There's some glaring plot holes in T:V that have irked some of the more hardcore franchise fans.

I miss the heyday of 'mech' games... Hell, Mechwarrior 2 was what first convinced me to ditch my Amiga and give in to Wintel. Starsiege had incredible production values and great atmoshpere, but I personally enjoyed the actual gameplay and missions of MW2/GBL/Mercs better. SS is well worth picking up though, and I can't wait for SS 2845.

Huge drive a truck thru them holes, that Thrax of all people should know better. Heck he was in Q/A during SS and SS:Tribes. Blake Hutchinson took a set of great games and gave them Life and I can't wait to see what his contributions to the SS Mod will bring us. To bad they didn't consult him or the guild (http://hweb.starsiegeuniverse.co m/).

You might want to try The Home of the Underdogs (www.the-underdogs.org). I think they have ES1 (ES2 is still for sale though). My bro played ES2, and from that I can say that it's a pretty good game (although a bit repetitive in gameplay).

I had the SS demo for a while: that's good one too as far as I could tell.

Hunter Hunted
Earthsiege
Earthsiege Expansion
Earthsiege 2
Starsiege
Cyberstorm
Cyberstorm 2
Stellar 7
Nova 9
Tribes
Tribes 2
Tribes Aerial Assult
Tribes Vengeance

I think you'll need a 3DO emulator for Stellar 7. Some of them are also on HotU as previously mentioned.

That list is missing Missionforce: Battledrome. And eventually, 2845, of course.

And yes, T:V has quite a few plot holes and inconsistencies in it that annoy some fans of previous games. It tries, but fails. Most of the developers had no clue that Tribes even had a story before they started working on it. The few that did had next to no real insight into it. The result is like a 14 year old trying to write an extra chapter into a great novel.
