Copy/pasted from DELL msg board:
I got my Dell Dimension 8400 yesterday and immediately formatted and reinstalled XP to get rid of all the useless software and clutter that they preload on the computers.
I installed all the drivers from the ResourceCD. Now, my sound will not work in any programs (internet, games, AIM, etc.) including the Windows sounds (shutdown/startup sounds, error sounds, etc.). However, the sound works fine in Windows Media Player. I can hear any mp3 or sound file without a problem using Windows Media Player.
I have tried reinstalling drivers several times, reinstalling XP again, making sure sound properties are correct, etc. still having the same problem. I'm out of ideas and DELL tech support also has no clue.
DELL is sending me another hard drive with all the factory preloaded software again because they can't figure out how to fix it, but Im still trying to figure it out to avoid the trouble.
Has anyone run into this before or have any ideas on how to fix it? Im using Windows XP SP2 on an DELL 8400 with SoundMAX Digital Integrated Audio. Any help would be appreciated.
