Opinions: Breakable grappler

Just wondering what everyone else thinks on this subject.

I'm not as enthused about T:V as I was at one time and after many hours of playing and thinking about it I've arrived at one thing in particular: The grappler.

Now, I'm not saying I don't like it. In fact I love it. It's added a whole new level to the freedom of movement to the game. However, it's also added a new level of frustration, especially on pubs. I can't tell you how many standoffs I've seen where people are swinging in circles with the grapplers around some objects and because teamwork is usually poor they can swing there almost indefinitly.

I personally would like to be able to cut these guys off their protective circle of swing.

I remember in (early) beta when the grappler was given ammo, I thought it'd help, but now I don't think that helped things at all. If it went back to infinite I don't think it'd make a difference.

So I'm putting in my vote for a mechanism to cut someone down. Just wondering how many others share my opinion.

- Breakable hook to prevent loop-de-loops

- Lower ammo count to prevent swinging around the entire map


edit: maybe weaken the line a little bit too to keep people from doing extreme turns and/or slingshotting themselves at higher speeds. I think the other two modifications would suffice though.

There have been a tun of threads about this, and I have supported this idea since day 1 of the beta. I don't think it would even affect gameplay that much at all, just be really damn cool, skill utilizing, and would be a great ulternitave to gimping the grappler in other ways. Would make for faster paced standoffs for sure, and get rid of the damn HaF on cavern (Heavy ABOVE flag.)

as a general rule i frown upon "nerfings", but i don't think much HARM could come from a destructable grappler hook.

if anything this would make players go and really master the grappler. not just aiming it at the most advantageous place, but taking care to ensure that it will be usable once fired... ideally, anyhow. im not sure how much this would gimp the grappler.... any half-skilled d/chaser can 'read' where the capper's going to try and grapple from given his movement and what possibilities there are in the vicinity etc... meh seems worth a shot, but maybe i'm just looking at this from too positive/hopeful an angle.


p.s. as said, ofn, but nice to see staff's opinion on the subject :D

Two discs is just as bad as indestructible. I'd say it doesn't need more than 10 health.

All you have to do is fly through the line to break it! COME ON!!! Give me a break! It's easy as hell to break a grappler.

Virus (www.virusgaming.org) server has mod running allowing you to shoot out grapple. Go play on it.

Everyone keeps on asking about the breakable grapple but no one ever bothers to go test it out to see how much of a diff it makes. Rather than make the same threads over and over ppl should go test out their theories on the server.

make the hook breakable, 1 disc should be more then enough

make the hook auto-disengage after say 3 seconds or so

Id agree with breakable hook, as long as it not destroyed TO easily. As in you just spam like crazy and blow it up if its within 20 feet.

5-8 grapple ammo.

Leave the physics/line strength alone.

how bout 1-2 cg bullets. if it had health, it should be easy to take out. one disc for sure

Well adding this change would stop 1/10th of the problem. The rest are grapple moves that no one would ever have the reflexes or possibility even to hit the point before the person was gone. If the problem wants to be seriously addressed there needs to be an ammo change.
