Here are the specs:
p4 2.8
9800pro w/ 4.8 catalyst drivers
512mb ram
I fired up CoD because I was bored, played it at 1280x1024 and it was lagging like a *****. I've played it before and it never did that, settings are the same.
My desktop is slow too, it takes a while to load things up.
I ran AdAware, didn't help. Virus check is ok and I defragged about a week ago
Any ideas?

Try a reboot?
Look for processes and services that shouldnt be running.
Check HD space.

Make sure you're not loading too many programs into your Taskbar. Try closing all but the most essential and seeing how game performance is affected.
Cleaning out your Registry might help some as well. Broken/orphaned entries can slow the system down.
Run Spybot S&D to catch whatever AdAware didn't.. and vice versa.
The easiest to forget.. make sure your OS drive has enough space on it. Anything less than 100MB and you're likely to see some HD thrashing.

Download to your desktop Adaware and Hijack this, both are free downloads. I recommend updating adaware then rebooting into safe mode before running the 2 programs, hijack this requires no update. Wneh running hijack this be careful of what you remove, it has been known to remove DNS servers so read what you are removing before you check it for deleting. Remove any startup items from msconfig that are not needed, i prefer to remove everything except for anti-virus software. If you are running Windows 98 also leave explorer and systray under your startup.

It may also be a good idea to make sure all fans are spinnig ok, i have seen PC's lag because of CPU fan not spinnig at full RPM's or lose CPU heatsink. This is most common on AMD machines thought, intel CPU's usually run a lot cooler than AMD CPU's. so i would try running the two programs i mentioned in my last post first.
