It caused quite a stir. Then they came out with Classic Coke.
I really like TV. I think they did a great job so far. Graphics and physics are great. It just feels, to me, like they are about a third done. It is said that they did not want to just produce T2 with better graphics. They wanted to create their own game. I don't know if I buy that. It's not that different. Put a few packs and jetpack in UT and it wouldn't be that much different.
Why is there a cloak pack in the source but it's not in the game? Because we decided, we would release the game sooner and there wasn't time to perfect it. Why don't the tribe functions work? I'm probably stretching but if this is how far they are now how long would it have takin to have the complexity of a T2? Another year?
Why not release it now less complex, make a little money (we have some financial difficulties you know) and hey, we can grab a new market that doesn’t like the complexity. Then when we release the full version and call it a mod. Tribes fans are so fanatical they'll endure. And hey, we might have that whole classic coke effect.
Hey, is that a VU account executive on the grassy knoll?
I'll go take my Zyprexia now. I hope that the voices will stop.

Actually the cloak pack was dumped waaaaay earlier in the design process. It was decided that it was simply not a good gameplay element and was not dropped because of time constraints.
I've said it before and I'll say it again - the game was completed by us exactly to our long-established schedule. It was released a week or so earlier by the publisher. Total development time was around two and a half years.

Why is there a cloak pack in the source but it's not in the game?because it would serve NO purpose in the final product Because we decided, we would release the game sooner and there wasn't time to perfect it.actually, the cloak pack was only put in the concept art, it was replaced with the speed pack Why don't the tribe functions work? I'm probably stretching but if this is how far they are now how long would it have takin to have the complexity of a T2? Another year?yeah, because complexity makes a good game. T2 was full of garbage that people on katabatic only servers used. These "complex things" would be worthless in T:V due to the sheer speed of the game and size of the maps
Why not release it now less complex, make a little money (we have some financial difficulties you know) and hey, we can grab a new market that doesn’t like the complexity. It was never intended to be a complex game, it went gold for a reason, it was done Then when we release the full version and call it a mod. Tribes fans are so fanatical they'll endure.im doing just fine with this game And hey, we might have that whole classic coke effect.

Er... not to be a pain or nuttun... but... then what gives with outstanding features that were ment for implementation that didn't make it in?
Carving, grapple point shooting, the tribal reg system... you guys have made multiple comments about each of these being things that were supposed to make it into the release version.
Then there's the beta versions of the SDK and ded server. Lots of this sound like time issues to me...
Oh crap. While eriting this it occurs to me... You said "the game was completed by us exactly to our long-established schedule". Um... so basicly what happened was you have a very fixed deadline that VUG wasn't going to be flexible with and ya nailed that by defering some of the pollish to post release.
I'm reading between the lines a bit, but that sounds plauseable to me.
Just tell us those things are still a go and we'll be hampy crampers!
Rosdower 11-10-2004, 10:10 PM yes, vug is ever so strict with their deadlines, just look at HL2

It would not be in their best interest to drop HL2, even if that game went decades behind schedule. It's a guarenteed, super-hyped seller, especially with a CS on it.

Sorry for my ignorance.
I do like the game enough that I find it hard to go back to T2. I wish I was as obsessed with it as I was with T2. You did do a great job. It is one of the best games out there. I just want it to be years ahead of it's time. I should probably be focusing on work anyway.
Is the game what you wanted it to be when you first invisioned the nexted tribes?
Rosdower 11-10-2004, 10:14 PM actually, i think tv might've done better if it was pushed back, not to work on it more, just to say it got pushed back.
edit: and are you chastizing them for being efficient? The game was done on time OHNOES!
BitRaiser 11-10-2004, 10:16 PM yes, vug is ever so strict with their deadlines, just look at HL2
Do you know anything about the giant furball that HL2 turned into? At this point I'll bet more than a few folks at VUG wish that they had the option of turfing it, regaurdless of it's gauranteed revenue generation.
If you don't, read. Now. http://www.gamespot.com/news/2004/09/24/news_6108100.html
If you do, then you're talking outta yer arse.
yes, vug is ever so strict with their deadlines, just look at HL2
They aren't financing HL2 so they have no say on the release date.
BitRaiser 11-10-2004, 10:21 PM Not, sure, but I assume this was aimed at me.
edit: and are you chastizing them for being efficient? The game was done on time OHNOES!
I'm not chastizing anyone about anything (except you maybe ;) ). I'm currious how a project manages to hit it's deadline and not have completed features. Never mind tho... if you can comprehend the post, you'll see I answered my own question and turned it into a "I just hope the after market support is good" comment.
If your comment wasn't directed at me.... well, just never mind then! :p
Rosdower 11-10-2004, 10:23 PM the game seems pretty complete to me other than some minor bugs. :-\
BitRaiser 11-10-2004, 10:28 PM Jeezus... ya doont reed gud does ya?
Missing features:
Non beta dedicated server
Non beta SDK
Tribal Registration
GameSpy Stat Tracking
Carving (limited manouvering while skiing)
Being able to shoot a grappler's hook to force a detach.
The last two are sorta limboed... we don't know if they will come or not. Some IG folks have mentioned work being done on them and wanting to see them in place.
The others HAVE to go in as they are actually part of the product.
Xonze 11-10-2004, 11:50 PM Jeezus... ya doont reed gud does ya?
Missing features:
Non beta dedicated server: Er, I could have sworn that there was no need for this in the first place until VU decided to place Securom on the cds as to not let you run a server unless you had the CD in the drive. I doubt IG had any say, or knew about it till the end.But hopfully they'll move it up from beta soon.
Non beta SDK: Most SDKs are beta man, thats why their agreements say "Not supported by so and so." They can update them but that doesn't mean they're going to fix everything with the SDK, because its an extra, not the game.
Tribal Registration You get this one, I'm still wondering why this doesn't work.
GameSpy Stat Tracking This one too
Carving (limited manouvering while skiing) This is limited movement while skiing, not to Tribes 1 or 2 scale, buts it's there. It could use some beefing though.
Being able to shoot a grappler's hook to force a detach. Theres a mod out for that(the cord, not the hook) at the moment, so I don't know if the dev's well take the time to do it, we'll see

We'll see what gets fixed in the patch when it comes out. Hopfully most, if not all will be dealt with in some way.

Zxqv8 11-10-2004, 11:57 PM Go stand on a flat surface, hold down ski and try to move side to side. See how far you get.

Oh yeah... I wasn't griping, I was ilistrating the point for someone that seemed to miss it.
I have a good sum of faith in IG.
And there is no contol while skiing ATM... without using your jets of grappler, that is.
Xonze 11-11-2004, 12:06 AM There is a tiny bit of control while skiing without using your jets or grappler. (I can dodge trees, rocks etc. , once in a while if I push A, or D awhile before I get there.) But its there however small.
BitRaiser 11-11-2004, 12:31 AM Nope... sorry, you've been luck or have either released your ski button or used a jet burst.
I've done a lot of testing and the devs have said the same. Skiing is zero friction zero control as is.
