?B-MAN 11-11-2004, 12:33 AM Or like when The Big 4 American car companies strayed away from greatness only to realize you shouldnt stray too far from what works.

Cinderkarst 11-11-2004, 12:46 AM Minivan is to Formula 1 as T2 is to T:V.
Ones got bells and whistles all over the place (removable seats, air conditioner, and those cute little DVD screens on the back of the seats), while another is stripped down to its bare essentials to focus on what it is at heart.

So on this basis, a Hugo should be considered the greatest car ever built. Although I wouldnt consider TV to be a Hugo :D
That 1969 Mustang GT 500 is cool.
menes 11-11-2004, 10:45 AM New Coke doesn't hold a candle to the original.
Like comparing water to wine
Amadeus 11-11-2004, 10:50 AM There is a tiny bit of control while skiing without using your jets or grappler. (I can dodge trees, rocks etc. , once in a while if I push A, or D awhile before I get there.) But its there however small.
You sometimes get lifted into the air by a small bump, and you can use drifting then.

That's a clever little way to circumvent the analogy. I would say that if anything was a "watered down" Tribes experience it would be T2. It lost focus on the things that made it Tribes and added a bunch of unnecessary elements in order to compensate (overpowered vehicles, "no-skill" weapons).
Xonze 11-11-2004, 11:03 AM You sometimes get lifted into the air by a small bump, and you can use drifting then.
Maybe that was it, but if I was it was a very small bit of air. :)

FantasticDamage 11-11-2004, 11:42 AM I wish they'd start putting coca back in Coke.

That's a flawed statement if there ever was one. What's the point of having more when it goes to waste or serves no practical purpose in comparison to something else? What good is a bumper harvest when part of it is doomed to rot? Are ten bad symphonies better than one good one simply because there are more?
Simplicity is the key to elegance.

Easier to downgrade then upgrade, so the principle holds true except those that aren't able to give more and even their best effort yields less.
If the premise did not hold true than Lexus would have no market and eveyone would be content with Yugos (at Lexus prices).
I see some are.
Stilgar 11-11-2004, 12:48 PM What I remember is coke backing off and reissuing "regular" coke.
I also remember T2 came out without the ability to demo.
It was fixed.
Some of the things you look for will also be rectified.
Patience grasshopper.
menes 11-11-2004, 12:53 PM Unfortuately, they can't reissue the original coke. No more washing down brownies with coke.
Proximus 11-11-2004, 01:12 PM shooting the hook will mean fook all
plz stop mentioning it as an important feature
i rather see a linux server edition

So, by your logic, just stuffing something with features should automatically make it better? Just adding on top of what exists is somehow better? Rethinking something is a bad thing? As far as I know, the more parts something has, the more likely it is to break down.
And acutally, I don't see how the argument you have shown correlates. You're talking about the pattern of consumption now. People buy Lexus because they like the feeling of having a "high-class" car, and humans are notoriously irrational spenders when it comes to certain items. Why do people own Mustangs and live in trailer parks?
Lambroughinis are expensive as well, but they are very, very spartan in terms of features. And yet, they command a pretty good price on the open market. I would say it's due to the fact there are two different demographics at work here, one which wants speed and another that wants amenity.
In short, bigger isn't always better. And also, diff'rent strokes for diff'rent folks.
menes 11-11-2004, 01:59 PM Cute, but unfortuantely half thought and unrealistic.
Features equate to value. Lack of the same equate to less value.
People purchase Lexus's less for the "feel" and more for the "value". The feel is an extra that comes with "quality".
If one takes a top end Lexus, strips out the high end features, than what you have is a subset of the original with less features, and less value.
Cars have lane change blinkers that half the drivers don't use. Thats no reason for auto manufacturers to remove blinkers cause some motorists can't think enough to actually use them.
Progress is shown by building in more features while making those features easier to access. Removing features is a backwards step towards lower value products.

Not all features equal value, only useful ones. If pressing control, U and E resulted in a BOTD, it would still be a feature, but nobody would be happy that it exists, and nobody would miss it if it was taken out.
Some of the equipment in T2 was so rarely used that it made no sense to spend time on making them when that time could be invested into something more useful.
menes 11-11-2004, 02:12 PM More features is ALWAYS a good thing. If you don't want them don't use them. At least you have the choice.
Better to have too much than too little.
Perhaps the T2 equipment was not used by yourself and ten others, but many, many others did find them useful and they are stating that by not buying this new game that insists its Tribes on name alone.
The proof is in the numbers, and numbers don't lie. It seems Tribers have spoken. The only saving hope is that T:V can pull in new blood from the UT crowd to replace lost sales.
