Breadman86 11-10-2004, 04:41 PM So apparently Brett Todd is a blubbering idiot. 70% is fair if he has good reasons... but his reasons blow. He says the Unreal engine looks dingy. He says the "Single-player difficulty is insane" but earlier in the article complained that they taught you too much and he didn't need to repeat lessons for "20 minutes." He then goes on to compare the game to UT2k4 (figures) and Warhammer 40,000. Wtf? And then at the bottom of the raticle they have a little "other options" thing that rcommends Star Wars: Battlefront and Unreal Tournament 2004 as "other options" to the apparently god-awful 70% score that T:V got.
I suggest we flood the PC office with e-mails telling them why T:V is great. After all, we do want this game to succeed. And if you're a fool who agrees with everything in the article, you have no place in this thread at the moment. He made some points like not enough maps and no bot support... but other than that Brett Todd should just be taken out and flogged for being such a dim witted dolt.
Pachacutec 11-10-2004, 04:44 PM hmm, i'm pretty open to this flooding. post email addies.

BitRaiser 11-10-2004, 04:46 PM This is why I stopped reading PC Gamer. The reviews are worthless, the previews are nothing more than paid for hype, and the old "writen by gamers for gamers" style is long gone.
Vote with your dollars and just don't pick up that mag anymore.
Breadman86 11-10-2004, 04:48 PM letters@pcgamer.com if you want to try and get them published... and I think if we send enough quality ones, at least one will be published. I think it is a better idea than emailing editor@pcgamer.com because he probably won't do squat. I'm not asking for a review change. I'm just asking letters to go out for people to actually read to show that we think that asswipes review was way off base.
and lets hold off on all the "PC Gamer BLOWS" crap.
BitRaiser 11-10-2004, 05:00 PM My shot has been fired.
BTW, isn't this the same PC Gamer that awarded T:V Game of The Month?
Breadman86 11-10-2004, 05:06 PM BTW, isn't this the same PC Gamer that awarded T:V Game of The Month?
doubt it? You're thinking of IGN.
Pachacutec 11-10-2004, 05:07 PM at the same time, i can't really say that his opinion is invalid. everyone is entitled to their view of the game, especially people who haven't played tribes before.
however, that doesn't mean we can't atacc it for being uninformed, (and what appears to be biased)
the mp isn't anything like unreal2k4 except for maybe the spawn system.
Menzo 11-10-2004, 05:19 PM I would wholeheartedly suggest that you email PC Gamer and let them know what you think of their review. I certainly have.
BitRaiser 11-10-2004, 05:36 PM at the same time, i can't really say that his opinion is invalid. everyone is entitled to their view of the game, especially people who haven't played tribes before.
The thing is, when someone is doing a critical review, they are supposed to be thinking about it in terms of the masses, not themselves.
As I say, tho, I quit reading the mag because it's become so increadibly worthless. MY breaking point was when they hyped the hell outta "Enter the Matrix" promising that it was going to be a revolutionary leap in interactive entertainment, then the next month they tore it apart calling it sub-standard. Unfortunatly for folks that trusted the mag, it was already too late... they published their review late and a lot of folks had already rushed out an grabbed the worthless POS game based on their glowing previews.
Just one case in many.
I miss PC Accelerator!
KnightMare 11-10-2004, 05:38 PM  he said sper was too hard?
greydog 11-10-2004, 05:57 PM i believe it when he says SP was hard. it's cake for the likes of us, but for a present-age brand new tribes player (or brand new fps player), tribes is rough. look at all the most popular FPS games out there (i.e. top 5 at www.gamespy.com/stats); they involve lesser number of weapons at a time (most of which are all very similar-machine gun based weapons), footspeed movement, and no 'base' management. just the sheer speed of jetpacks + skiing kicks the game up a huge degree of difficulty.
conceptually, tribes has always been an awsome game. i see it just as people picking the path of least resistance, which the general population will always do. ties into MMO's too, but that's another topic..
BitRaiser 11-10-2004, 06:00 PM That's like panning Shindler's List because it takes some thinking to truely grasp it.
I've already introduced T:V to some non-Tribes players... and they picked it up no problem. Ofcource, these guys are friends of mine and thus actually HAVE brains unlike your typical shooter junky.
Pachacutec 11-10-2004, 06:21 PM i think some things we're inclined to forget is,
with consoles the entire experience is streamlined from day 1, you can't release an incomplete product or a crappy fps product or one expecting updates or quasi finished gui, and that completeness makes console games attractive to the casual gamer
meanwhile in the universe of pc gaming,
1. go download your latest drivers everything/defrag/trybeta drivers/alter rendering settings, upgrade bios maybe etc.
2. client-side scripts upset the balance making some people feel like the playing fields aren't level.
you have to be a pc gamer to jump on that, you just have to be. seems like nothing is finished out of the box and that's awful. that horrible trend seemed to start with t2-era games. right after that disastrous release, some mmorpg suffered the same thing...
console games are not pirateble and that also reinforces sales.
if they could use keyboard mouse, i would be inclined to play on them myself, but joystick keypad crap is useless to me, i was done playing ataris years ago. i hear there are keyboards you can buy now, but are usually limited in ways.
finally, just better advertising, hype machines in place for console games. i dont think i've seen a hl2 commercial yet in movies/commercials, but i saw halo 2 on the effing spanish channel saturday night. HALO IN effING SPANISH. tv/cable everywhere everything/everywhere masterchief.
i think vu needs to brush up on polish releases/brand development and advertising.
no offense to devs or representatives from vu here, maybe time constraints and upper mgmt push product out the door with minimal budgets, but truth stands, i dont see a t:v commercial anywhere.
========================= ==
honestly VU with all its capital should explore the possibility of a lower level software solution for all its gaming franchises and insist developers code on it to ensure product stability/ease of adoption. console stability > * :\ . otherwise pc games could very well be crushed under the might of the console...
as it is, i'll most likely buy my xbox for myself within the next month or so.

My buddy had never played a Tribes game before in his life and managed to beat it on Medium within a week. This reviewer must have been ground hugging the entire time if he thought it was so tough. But hey, what are you gonna do? Some people just can't adapt to new and unfamiliar styles of games.
BitRaiser 11-10-2004, 06:26 PM Man... I've got a complete ludite of a buddy that I got to sit down and play through Mecury's assasination missions. He doesn't play ANY games very much. He was able to get through that with minimal suffering (and loved it, BTW).
I think this reviewer needs to start playing games... after he get's fired.
Pachacutec 11-10-2004, 06:30 PM regardless, i'll send my emails when i get home ;) just had to get all that out.
BitRaiser 11-10-2004, 06:32 PM Pachacutec's cliffs:
- Consoles sell well because even a shaved monkey can work 'em. Stupid people rule!
- VUG (much like every other major publisher) is killing the PC industry by not caring about anything except the bottom line.
[edited to add point 2]
