Scorpion 11-11-2004, 10:48 AM Well, no matter how many awesome online-reviews T:V gets rating-wise, theyīre useless when you fail with with the big boys (pc gamer).
No wonder itīs selling shazbot.
p.s. Although I donīt play T:V, being a long time t1/2 player, I find 70% pretty retarded. 75-80% is about right.
menes 11-11-2004, 10:51 AM I thought their review was quite accurate, but I'm at a loss being objective and all
Actually a 70 is still a good review from them. Frankly I'm surprised it got that high. Not because I think it's a bad game, I love it myself, but because the reviewer didn't come across as someone who played it for more than an hour.
Flatscan 11-11-2004, 11:09 AM While VU/IG have been quiet since release, and the tourney mode problems etc. sound very annoying, the criticism of Menzo is *way* too strong.
He is the *PR guy* - this means that he has NO influence over when the patch comes out, if it comes out at all. Would you prefer he make up a date, and then blow the date? It is likely that he has been instructed to provide no information whatsoever.
Further with regard to how T:V was marketed, in case you haven't noticed VU games has been laying people off right and left and closing offices. This means crap budgets for game promotion generally especially for games that haven't been huge successes historically (e.g. Tribes). [The box design did suck ass, however heheh.]
VU has to pick it's fights carefully and Tribes wasn't high on the list. Whine all you want, but that's the economic reality.

Thats pretty much what I feel, but was too lazy to write it.

I dont think Menzo is personally to blame for the dissappearing act, incomplete game etc... but Public Relations is a two way street.
He better be telling the powers that be that the grace period from tribers is about over. This community wont stop gaming if they dont fix T:V, itll just spread hate for all involved over the internet for freaking ever.
Mercil 11-11-2004, 12:33 PM I miss PC Accelerator!

Breadman86 11-11-2004, 12:40 PM Out of respect for the series:
I wont email pc gamer and tell them that thier review is about 10 points too high.
Just like many games nowdays, potentially great game bugged on release, and dissapearring dev team/publisher.
You guys were all over these forums when there was potential to use us to promote your product (just like this thread).
You forgot to read the first few posts. If you noticed, I wasn't complaining about the 70% score because I know some people feel that way. I was complaining about the utterly pathetic writing of the review, and horrible reasons for making it so low. He said the SP was insanely diffcult! Yet in his article complained that he didn't need all this stupid training! He's just a bad reviewer who made false points that need to be refuted.
Also, for those of us who do like the game, we want it to succeed. And reviews like that don't help so the best way to get our voice out into a magazine is by sending them a letter that could be printed, telling "our opinion." Sure, it might not do jack squat, but it's better than standing on teh sidelines and getting beat up by some unknown ignorant fool.
Well, T:V just ain't all that.
menes 11-11-2004, 12:50 PM If you want the game to succeed than don't buy it until it meets or exceeds your expectations, and make the company aware of the reasons their game is a failure.
If you buy it and it falls way short of expectations you just set the stage for the company to release even less in the future. Cause they know a sucka is born every minute that doesn't mind paying more for less.
Buying a lump of crap saying you support the series is a huge consumer mistake that only sets lower expectations for the future.
It's like patting your dog when he takes a dump on your carpet. Supportive but in the long run, not a good idea.

Avox I would be surprised if Menzo wasn't advocating for the game inside VU. His career benefits if games that he manages take off.
Given that he posts here at all, I think it's fair to assume that he cares and appreciates that the Tribes competitive community could help (or hurt) sales.
The anger over tourney mode, etc. is palpable. I'm sad to hear players on top teams like TAU and Rapture talk seriously about the game dying before January if a patch isn't released soon.
...
I read all the posts. I havent read the PCGamer review, although i'm sure the guy was dinging T:V for all the wrong reasons.
I have never read an informed review of any tribes game in any printed gaming magazine/or major gaming website. Even if I agreed with a postive review of a tribes game, the reviewers usually lacked even basic understanding of how freedom of movement defines tribes gameplay.
I have accepted most game design issues. Serveral things I thought would be gamebreakers have turned out to be great additions/ommissions from what was in the 1st 2 games.
What I, and many other reasonable tribes players wont accept is another broken game.
It pains me to talk crap about any tribes game, even t2, but I cant be bothered to support companies that dont support me.
opstand 11-11-2004, 02:02 PM I just read the review last night and thought it was pretty bad myself. After reading it I too was convinced he maybe spent an hour playing it.
I always hear complaints from other gamers who aren't into Tribes that, when they tried to play Tribes, it was no fun. I ask why and they say something like "Well, I stepped outside the base and got sniped in the head". People want something easy that makes them feel good, not something that they have to work hard at to get good at. I think most people who play Tribes can appreciate the level of skill and amount of time that goes into hitting MAs consistently or being able to ski well. This reviewer obviously doesn't. I'd be surprised if he even attempted to ski, that is if he knows it's part of the game.
He also complained about the multi-player. IMO, the multi-player in most games suck if you join a random server with random people and try to win. It's going to be frustrating because there is no teamwork. Tribes shines brightest in that it is a very solid team game and requires lots of practice, organization, and discipline for a team to become good. You just can't experience that when you play the game for an hour or two just so you can write a review on it.
Voidsinger 11-11-2004, 02:55 PM I would wholeheartedly suggest that you email PC Gamer and let them know what you think of their review. I certainly have.
Why the HELL should anyone do anything for VUG?
Painkiller is a floundering game, yet they're still trying to push it. It's gonna be the next official game for the CPL.
What are you doing? What's your plan to push T:V? Asking us to put banner on our sites? Emailing game mags after a bad review?
I'm the fanboy you were supposed to come after. I'm the fanboy that pushed Tribes, that survived through bugs and mishaps. I was already sold on the game as soon as it was announced. Ask yourself this: How did you lose me? Why don't I support the game anymore?
Find that answer.

Good questions, and a proper response.

Emilee 11-11-2004, 03:19 PM PC Gamer gave Doom3 a almost perfect score.
zVxTeflon 11-11-2004, 03:45 PM this being the SAME pc gamer that gave Tribes 2 a 97%
this game out of the box is 10x better
youre an idiot, PC Gamer never gave T2 a 97%....it was like 80something.
edit. it was 89%
Cluey 11-11-2004, 04:37 PM In the british version it scored highly I think (or was that PCZONE)
anyways, who cares what others think, critics tend to be too beuracratic with their reviews and forget to mention one thing, "is the game fun to play?" and in Tribes Vengeances' case, it is!
Phantom 11-11-2004, 04:39 PM The UK PCZone review will be in the december issue.
We went on a server with the writer of the article and took some screens :) That was fun, and I might end up in the mag...
