pocketgamer 11-01-2004, 02:35 PM OK, I was reading this new Frank O' Connor interview that GameSpy just released. When reading it, it made me think about where T:V went wrong.
http://xbox.gamespy.com/xbox/halo-2/562370p2.html?fromint=1
"You'd be amazed at the number of things that we had working and finished in the game that were removed because they weren't balanced or they weren't fun."
"We talked about sprinting and leaning, and those were in the game. What happened was that they changed how Halo felt, so out they came. But there are things in there that did work."
"I guess there's a temptation for developers when making a game to leave everything in that they were able to put in, whether it's good or not, because they worked on it. But the designers here are really, really, really careful to make sure that everything in there is fun and that's pretty much how that process went."
I think T:V could have been a huge success if they had just had this attitude/approach to making the game.
Amadeus 11-01-2004, 02:39 PM Where, exactly?
Fugitive 11-01-2004, 02:43 PM Wait, isn't that exactly what Irrational said they did? Trim off the excess fat like the ELF gun an sensor pack?

Werd. This post sucks. T:V is great, I play it everyday, and I'm a Tribes 1 fanatic. Just because you don't like it doesn't mean others won't.
Jeezus, I'm getting tired of these threads...WHEN WILL THEY END?

What do you know about TV development process ? What do you know about features which were implemented or not ? Were you part of the dev team ? Can you list us all the features studied during TV development ? Do you have all the project specification versions ?
Or do you just judge the difference between the Beta and the Retail ? (do you know what a beta is for ? do you think TV gameplay was built between beta and retail ?)
Bluntzman 11-01-2004, 02:50 PM /me wonders if this is an anti-grabbler post
sonic- 11-01-2004, 02:52 PM I think they did add a lot of fun stuff to TV. One of the areas I think they didn't put a lot of thought into are the maps, and how to make them fun. The maps are unique and somewhat fun, but they lack something. Dash and Canyon Crusade are immensely fun, and why? Because they have well thought out designs. I can't wait to see what else we get.
pocketgamer 11-01-2004, 03:02 PM What I was reffering to is that they took stuff away that was fun. Then they added stuff that wasn't fun, and so they just tweaked it as much as they could have instead of starting over on some parts, or removing some of those parts.
Lets take the vehicles for example.
In T:V it was. . . 'these suck, well lets tweak them.' In the end you still have vehicles with a lot of problems.
In T2 is was .. . 'This vehicle sucks and adds nothing. Lets get rid of it. After all that hard work we put into it? Yes. OK. Hey this is a cool idea, lets try it out.' In the end you have stuff that is fun and that works.

So you were part of the dev team of TV AND T2 !
How do you know that the dev team did not work on other vehicule ? do you know for example that they did lots a map which were not release, because they were not "fun" ?
And please do not speak for every one. TV is not fun for you, ok. But I, for instance, find it fun and enjoy it.
TeckMan 11-01-2004, 03:20 PM bla bla bla, I am an obvious jerk.
do you really think this is new information to professional game developers? go shazbot in your mouth.

rofl what a rediculously vague post. you literally just said nothing. i hope everyone you love and care about dies painfully while you watch helplessly.

Okay, so what you're trying to say is:
"I do not like the basic idea of some of the vehicles in T:V"
Right?
And TeckMan, stfu.
TeckMan 11-01-2004, 03:42 PM And TeckMan, stfu.
we're in agreement and you tell me to stfu? I don't think you want to start this argument.
Did I catch a reference to the T2 dev team as "doing a good job"?
Huh.
How about that.
TeckMan 11-01-2004, 03:52 PM T2 is one of few games to support 60+ players with little lag.
T2 is the only game capable of generating infinite amounts of terrain on a server without lag.
T2 is fun.
you are not.
Father Ruckus 11-01-2004, 03:55 PM T2 is fun.
i found my ACL reconstruction just as fun as t2.
pocketgamer 11-01-2004, 05:51 PM lol. . .. I should read all my posts before posting.
When I put T2, I meant to put HALO 2(H2). lol. . . I see how that could cause a problem.
Undisciplined 11-01-2004, 06:10 PM The T:V team DID essentially follow this design philosophy, it's just that their version of fun is not compatible with yours. It's just as some people would find sprinting and leaning in Halo to be fun, but apparently the design team didn't think so. Too bad.
Plus, the quotes that you give no indication that cutting things suddenly frees up the time and resources to ADD new things. You act as if they could just toss the T:V vehicles and make new ones instead of tweaking the existing ones. More likely, if the vehicles really aren't up to standards, then according to this philosophy they should just be cut completely. If this happened to T:V, it would be even more basic than it already is.
