can't get good speed without very sharp small upturns in this game, speed doesnt last at all over a distance, and barely even accumulates... in practice this made heavies very powerful because they weren't missing anything, but lights were missing most of their manueverability and speed and getting clobbered
I think we'll definitely need a mod for maps like this for people who want to play with oldschool tribes play
one interesting plus is that the grappler becomes more useful on land that's very steep, it actually grabs for once, as opposed to all the breaks and difficulty on using it with less steep land for any good

Well good looking map and big, however IMHO who ever is playing defense is going to give up in a heart beat. Why? since it is a large map its just to far to get mines and turrets. I would suggest adding a building closer to the flag that housed Invetory supplies. Its a real bummer not having deployable inventory in a deployable inv station! :deal:
suavivity 10-22-2004, 05:33 PM i just got done messing around in this map with a couple people and loved it. it's big enough with good hills that chasing may actually be a viable strategy. having the flag out in the open means it'll be easier on the def to see incoming cappers and take necessary action. to me, i think the map'll play a lot like feign. great map...keep up the good work tsetse.

If you make a map that is mostly just terrain like the traditional Tribes maps it will run a lot faster than the retail maps.

nah, it's the same speed fps wise, no problems there.
Running on Unlagged central. Server only runs DX and Dash.

IMO, we actually need to try even BIGGER maps before we complain. :)
As for the OOBs, it's "tight" only at one angle due to the diagnal design. I donno, if folks really have a lot of trouble i guess i can pull it out more but the play-area already seems really big.
As for ski-friendliness... I sure hope that 1-liner comment wasn't supposed to be a criticism cuz I can't fathom suggesting this map isn't ski friendly. If you cant ski on this... well... you need to just give up on tribes. :)

There IS a little bunker right by the flag, with inventory station, deployables, etc.
It's wide open tho so it will get smashed often... but it has a manned turret which is basically useful for depending that area (since it cant reach far).
That said, you might be right that folks give up on defense, but I tried to use an old school approach. However, simply making the flag area "grappler friendly" might counter all that.

You take things a little too personal.
Yes, you can ski on this map. The unfriendly part is where I defy you to ski, full fledged, flag to flag without cratering.
Nice map, regardless.

No, i'm not taking it personally... as this map is like a 3-day project for me and just an experiment. I just don't see this criticism.
Certainly the terrain isn't mindlessly easy. That's precisely what i DIDNT want. I can grant that it will catch a lot of folks who believe they are "1337 cappers" off-guard cuz they cant just hit boost and cap in a split second.
The terrain is sorta like old school open t1/t2 in that sense... as i see it.
But it seems to me there are a ton of solid routes for those who play it a bit, and the really skilled capper can likely practically fly across it.
If this turns into a real problem well... i'll prolly not completely redo the terrain much cuz i just was testing the design.

I really like the layout of the map.. There's LOTS of ski routes.. You need to spend more time skiing if your cratering on this map.

Exactly.
The grappler options are there cuz well... i wanted to offer all elements (and to simply see how that plays as my primary map project relies heavily on them).
Just had a good game on the map with a bunch of people. Interesting gameplay. I suspect until people get to know the map I can't make any early judgements. Until both teams are actively using both rovers... it's hard to say what to expect.
I should be finishing a final version this weekend. SMOOTHING THE TERRAIN is #1 priority.
Keep the feedback coming.
PS. those who want to spawn closer to the flag... consider putting one of the two Rovers there. You also got 2 deployable inventories at that bunker :)

Rigel 10-22-2004, 08:39 PM I just got done playing this with you Tse ( I was Crusade), and I have a few suggestions:
- When you add the two platforms for HD please put in two Catapults. I think this will help the LD chase down the Cappers. While I don't think Defense is impossible it certianlly is difficult, but I think the openness helps the defense. As Tse can attest, its not that hard for me to hunt down cappers.
- I would prefer the base have two entrances, one with a energy barrier over it. Mostly because its a pain to get in there, especially with bases that are so closed off.
- I think adding a second spawn point would be good, however, if you do that can I suggest you make the main base a tower on top of one of the hills. If you make the base by the flag another spawn point then theres really no point in spawning in the origional base because you're closer to a flag and a rover. I suggest making the main base larger (only slightly) and higher up to provide a better route away from the base (perhaps floating?), and the secondary base to be small and slightly farther away in a valley.
- Also, fix the spawn points, as some of them a really far away.
Frozer!!! 10-22-2004, 08:48 PM This is a good map IMO. I like how everything is spread out and the map seems pretty big to me. There are plenty good ski routes and this map is just plain fun. Its a simple design and you did a nice job for a 2-3 day map. Thnx
