Probably OFN but Tank Turret follows front of tank?

This is my first extended experience with T:V (6 hours).

I'm very impressed with the overall design of the game however when I got in the tank and couldn't operate the turret direction of fire independant of the treads (treads always follow direction of turret barrel/reticle) I was extremely dissapointed. Half the fun of driving a tank is freedom of movement regardless of where or what you want to shoot. Is there a way to disconnect the motion of the tank from the turret?

It may be that it's easier for a keyboard/mouser to operate it this way, however I happen to be using a Kingston ExpertMouse 7.0 (2.5"ball), Saitek Cyborg EVO stick and a 2 footpedal switch configuration (all 100% keyboard/mouse emulatable - Foot pedals are for skiing and jump jetting btw ;) ).

Anyhow, all in all it's a minor oversight but it would have been nice. All the other vehicles are pretty manageable.

Great Job IG !

Oh and I can't forget to thank everyone that's posted to the Tribes V tweaks thread !

The "mortar" turret of the tank is linked to the front of tank. There is also a chain gun turret, which can be moved by a gunner and which is not linked to the tank heading.

As I remember in tribes 2, there was just 1 mortar turret, which need a gunner. In tv, the pilot can use the mortar turret, so the tank can be used only by one man. To counter balance that, it can only fire in the tank heading.

Am I right ?

No, you're not right.

It's a crappy design flaw, which aims to please 1-3 year old players + those who get confused when the tank goes to a different direction compared to where the cannon points.

In T2 the gunner controlled both the machine gun and the mortar turret on the tank. That was far better imo.

It's still a valid point.

The whole idea of having a turret on a tank is to allow the vehicle to track targets while moving in a completely different direction. Its a valid point you asshat.

BF1942 style is best and really intuitive. just WSAD for steering and for/rev and then mouse for turret. also works for bikes or anything else. you look with your mouse. you drive with your keyboard

thats how it works for most games too. Was mentioned during beta but no love. Its a much better control scheme. Plus it makes the ground vehicle physics look less tacky.

devs listen on this one plz..

his point was lost (to me) somewhere within infantile complaints about the game's projected audience. while i see the merit of your point i also feel that the tank's steering works out well as a handicap, despite the developers' intent.

"his point was lost (to me) somewhere within infantile complaints about the game's projected audience."

I don't get this. Who is complaining? I only stated the obvious. I honestly think that they introduced this steering system in order to please those human beings who can't drive a vehicle and look/shoot the opposite direction at the same time. Very young children comes to my mind (those 1-3 year olds) as well as those who simply lack the ability. I mean come on! Why else would they do that? You talk about such design being a some sort of a handicap. Now please explain to me why this steering is used in the buggy as well? The driver can't do anything else than drive in that vehicle. Why can't he look around while driving the thingy? Would it make the buggy so overpowered that such handicap is justified? Yea, right..

Like you said it yourself, handicapping the vehicle was hardly their intention. I think they were either trying to please the audience I described earlier in order to maximize the number of potential buyers or they are simply plain stupid. You pick the one which suits you best.

I think the tank Mortar has a bug, it doesn't even follow the crosshairs if you are sitting at an angle upwards.

This sucks since you can't even tell you're at an angle. There is NO artificial horizon.

Also, the fact that there isn't a first person view from the mortar stinks.

Press the spacebar so the tank will Ski. You can operate the turret independently that way.
