Tribes disk is invisible to my cdrom - securom the culprit?

I can only guess that this is what people are complaining about securom about - my computer cant see the tribes vengeance disk. my cdrom is getting old, so i put in a much dirtier CD to see if it was acting up - low and behold, it runs up fine with no problems. My TV disk looks squeaky clean.

I have daemon tools (virtual cd emulator), the CD can't be seen whether or not this is turned on. like i said, other CDs (that are scratched and dusty) work fine. A reboot has worked once to fix this, but that doesnt work now.

Any suggestions? Any way to rule out securom as the culprit? I've been holding off on buying a new drive until i have the spare cash... theres a 250$ telescope accessory i need to acquire first :x

First off have you already installed the game, or can you not even make it to that step? If you have already installed it then just go download the no-cd fix and your in business.

I would also suggest going to the maker of your cd-rom's website and downloading the latest drivers directly from them. After that go buy a new cd-rom. You can buy a 56X speed cd-rom from newegg for 15 dollars. So they are not exactly expensive.

yeah, its already installed, and has worked before - thats why im having problems figuring out whats going on with it, because it seems erratic.

as for getting a new drive, im looking to buy a dvd burner, so around 100$ (canadian). and like i said, other cds are working fine. ill look up drivers tho.

Here's some info on SecuROM for ya.

Something in there might help. If not, post back.

BR, wtf, you know way more than me, a gzillion, you should know about this stuff.... You have tarnished that super-god PC 'Garu' image I have of you!!?? :o

***shaz, hope I am thinking and associating this thread with correct situation, yikesss***

id rather not have to uninstall the virtual drive software. from the description in BRs linked article, it does indeed sound like im having securom issues - the drive will spin up, stop, spin up, stop, perhaps 5 times in what must be an attempt to read the disk.

im fairly sure its not a driver issue, mainly because all other CDs work fine. i guess ill explore some alternative options.

:nofu: big props to VUG

Well Kry, let us know how it goes... I would hope you will post back your findings and hopefully your success so we all learn...

You said in last post: it does indeed sound like im having securom issues ---> guess from what I know that what I say may have merit and you are disregarding the exact thing BR was linking to; seems like a contradict in what you are saying!!?? Lemme know, maybe I am reading you wrong and I don't wanna do that.... Honestly I would think you don't have to un-install the virtual drive ===>> just move it or re-associate it somehow{how I don't know cause I am lacking in that knowledge and hope BR will help}, but 'hidding' the virtual drive would/should be a quickie option to try to Rule Out(RO) this possibility of this causing the prob; yes/no ??

Some software have no probs with ghost or virtual drives ===> I made the suggestion cause you brought it up so I assume you have some knowledge in this which is great ---> we need all the input and possibilities and hardware/software permutations and variables that many of us have experienced to add to our Knowledge Base.... Peace and definitely gl..... ;)

I couldn't install either, no matter what I tried, and I tried a lot.

The solution was getting another drive to install from.

Old drive -
Asus DVD-E616P

New drive -
Plextor CD-R Premium

With the new drive, I installed without a hitch, first time, with Daemon tools, Alcohol 120% and various other stuff installed. Haven't had any problems.

Did you look at the link I posted?
I knew danged well that SecuROM would have issues with some people's set ups as soon as I heard it was applied. Since I've been kicked in the teeth by it before, I wanted to make sure there was something on the "offical" page that could be searched for that would answer some questions.

Read speed is the most critical factor to SecuROM. If it can't do a scan of the entire disk at the speed it's supposed to, it thinks you've put a burned copy into the drive. Some apps (like almost all virtual drive apps) can effect how your drive reads it information and causes the occasaional SecuR-freakout.

To those with suspected SecuROM problems:

The best way to find out if this is really the problem is to DL a crack. Unfortunatly on this forum you are not alowed to link to the cracks, so I'm not gonna. (I had to re-write that post on the offical side to remove all refferance to cracks since VUG got a little choked.)
Search for it. You should be able to find it... even if it takes a World of Game Copy to do it. ;)

Peace, peace peace -----yikes, may have to go bowling for punishment after that tongue lashing now that I am sooooo depressed :*
My apologies, I was just kidding around with you BR and I truly am glad you are one of the bright peeps here that are informed and help....

BR, you are talking about the same thing I am saying ~~~~> things are confusing for me from what Kry is saying and after re-reading your link BR, it confirmed what I was thinking; guess I didn't articulate it well..... ;)

alternate measures seem to have worked.

why bother using securom when it can be beaten by using google, yet causes a giant pain in the ass for people?

Donno. I strongly suspect that Soney is cutting deals with publishers behind the scenes. SecuROM is known to be faulty and very beatable, while there are plenty of other systems out there that are tougher to crack AND don't cause problems for legit users.

FYI, EVERYTHING by Atari has SecuROM on it. I had a bit of a scrap with those guys that resulted in them sending me writen autherization to crack their games! How much sence does THAT make??
