LostAngel 10-11-2004, 11:47 AM This is the first time in my entire time of playing tribes where I SHOULD be stoked to play, and instead I have a sick feeling in my stomach like I got kicked there and can't breath.
I was stoked all through Beta and then release came and nothing really went up as far as the "stoked" factor. I convinced one of my best friends to get hyped up over tribes and when release came he installed the game. Within 5 minutes of playtime on SP it crashed and I told him not to worry about it, that mine crashed in the first 5 minutes as well. I talked to him this morning at work and he said it crashed 20 more times and he submitted each one as a bug report but he couldn't get anywhere in the game. I felt so bad. I had convinced him to spend the 50 bucks on the game and now he can't even play it.
The new maps are ... mediocre at best. Out of 12 of them or however many there are, there are only 3 that are moderately fun. So 75% of the time I log in to pub, I'm not having a good time because the map is just crummy.
Then there's the poor performance. I'm not sure what happened between Beta and now but I have a killer PC (AMD 64 3200+, 1Gig DDR Mushkin ram, 6800 Ultra) and my performance went down by about 20fps and now I get around 30-40fps in heavy traffic in T:V whereas I get at least 100fps in UT2k4 with everything turned up.
It's just depressing. Maybe competition will spark the fever again... but right now I just feel really sad. I don't want to move onto another game, but this isn't the tribes I used to know :(
I'll try and keep pubbing in hopes things change so I guess I'll see you guys in the pubs. Our team seems to have a similar layout. About 75% of us feel 'bleh', 10% hate the game, and 15% really like it. Just was wondering if anyone else had the same feeling? Or is it just me.
FreshMeat 10-11-2004, 11:56 AM Hey LA, try this. If you are using XP and you have alot of programs running in your system tray or in the background. Click, Start, then RUN. Type MSCONFIG. This will open the System Configuration Utility. Click the Startup tab, and disable some of the applications that run at startup. I bet you something is interfering or taking up alot of memory that is causing the crash. Disable one at a time, and reboot to see what is missing. If you installed SP2, then you might want to uninstall it or reinstall WinXP without SP2. T:V is a great game with mass potential. I know you are discouraged, but there is lotz to be stoked about. Your System Config just might be all hosed up. Another thing. Uninstall all previous versions of the beta completely. Then delete the Tribes Vengeance Demo and Tribes Vengeance MP directories off your computer. Then install Tribes Vengeance Retail in a whole new directory. I installed mine in the root of C: in a folder named Tribes Vengenace (C:\Tribes Vengeance). If you have customized T:V, like the TribesHUD.ini. Don't use that for right now. Make sure T:V is stable first. Also, update your Video Card drivers, Sound Card Drivers and Motherboard BIOS. Then reinstall DirectX 9c. That might help as well. Goodluck!
The problem is really with your System's OS, and not your hardware. If you feel realy spunky, do this.
1) Uninstall all occurences of Tribes Vengeance from your machine. Delete all old T:V directories out of your Program Files Directory or wherever you put them.
2) Upgrade all your major hardware drivers.
3) Reinstall DirectX 9c
4) Clean out your Recycle bin.
5) Use MS Config to get rid of some of the programs that you don't use from running in the background.
6) Reinstall Tribes Vengeance in a new directory C:\Tribes Vengeance. Don't install GameSPY.
7) Use default config to start with. Then tweak after the game playes stable for several hours.
Here are some resources for you:

Post questions if you have any!
NeotiK 10-11-2004, 11:57 AM Yea I feel the same. Pubs are god-awful as usual. The dedicated server release (beta) seems to bring on shazbotty netcode, which makes me have trigger lag as if I have 200 ping when i'm pinging 30.
The whole "drive" that use to be there when i played T2 isn't there anymore. And by drive i mean the desire to pub. I guess it was because I was more of a newbie in the early days of T2 so my ignorance made it fun...I dunno. Now I join pubs and it never ceases to amaze me the stupidity of some people (the people that join to just tk, etc.).
I've lost hope altogether with pubbing, but i'm hoping my drive will jumpstart again once my team gets into competition. Right now the major reason I'm playing is not because I like T:V (as a game I still do), but because I like TRIBES and the people I play TRIBES with.

It's a clean install. No programs other than ventrilo are running at any time when I'm playing T:V. Heck even my background is still the default blue. I have the 66.81 Forceware drivers and running a riva tuner with the stutter fix that was posted here a while ago. Like I said, everything else I run plays perfectly, it's just T:V that seems to lag hard. I'll keep grinding away at it hopefully the spark will come back...
Elitist 10-11-2004, 12:03 PM same here
Razeth 10-11-2004, 12:08 PM What we need are some community made maps. The ones they released like LA said except for mabey three just blow. I think they were made by some random guy whos never played the game. No consideration for ski routes or anything
ParoxysM 10-11-2004, 12:09 PM 4) Clean out your Recycle bin.
OMG IT WERKS!!
FreshMeat 10-11-2004, 12:10 PM Are you running DirectX 9c or 9b. Click start -> Run --> thentype DXDiag.
Look at the DirectX Version. It should be DirectX 9.0c (4.09.0000.0904). Also, even though its a fresh install, run MSCONFIG and see what is starting up. You never know what might be popping up. Also, run through the XP tweak guide I posted. It did me wonders!

You would be surprised. Some people store 0-10GB of deleted files on their machine. When you have a small hard drive this makes a difference. Even though you delete a file, it is not deleted from your machine until you empty the recycle bin. Windows 98/2000/XP just mark the file deleted on your hard drive but doesn't actually remove it from your system until you empty the recycle bin. If you have past T:V installs, this could interfere.
Satan- 10-11-2004, 12:30 PM Yeah jesse about 50% of my guys wont even play the game (mostly due to the grappler and other quirky things) 45% of us are bleh and 5% think its good.
greydog 10-11-2004, 01:01 PM you're not alone LA.. your team and Satan-'s team's % are similar to what i'm seeing from my old tribes buds. last week i was thinking that we'll need at least two weeks for things to pick up, now my thinking has changed to "i hope things pick up after a month".
Pachacutec 10-11-2004, 01:04 PM easy guys, i'm pretty sure we'll see some bug fixes and optimizations between now and forever.
TF_Baxter 10-11-2004, 01:05 PM Most of Team Fusion likes the game, we all have our pet peeves about this or that, but overall we've been enjoying it. However, the slow start to retail was a little depressing, but I've been able to find a server with a good ping to play on lately whenever I want to play.
Granted, we're not playing continuously all day long - most of us are beyond being able to do that in general because we're older and have things to do, not to mention, as seasoned and jaded gamers, it's really tough to pull us in like that to any MP game.
Personally, I'm just waiting to play some scrims and matches on the new maps, especially now that we can record demos.
KnightMare 10-11-2004, 01:06 PM like I said before the release, the performance will kill this game.

baxter if you want to work out some scrims pm me gonstone or vigilante in #3wa :)
crouton 10-11-2004, 01:20 PM A lot of factors are combining to contribute to the lack of 'interest' in T:V. The shazbotty release, the release being a week earlier than expected, the lack of a dedicated server on release, lack of advertising, other games coming out the exact same time, etc.
It's a good game, no doubt, but it's enough different from previous Tribes games to throw off a lot of people. We need the new blood to come in and make up the difference. Xmas will be the litmus test - if we get big numbers on the 26th and right after school begins around Jan 3rd (college kids waiting for that sweet phat pipe) then we'll see good times.
pyrot3chnic 10-11-2004, 01:31 PM I like the game, but I'm just a little worried right now. I'll give it a few weeks, I'm convinced( or just hoping ) it's a slow start and it will pick up. But yea, morale seems down, there doesn't seem to be as much excitement in the community. And all the retarded bash threads I'm seeing from the faqqots that won't go away aren't helping.
I enjoyed the single player, so in a worst case scenario, I can say I enjoyed the game. I don't regret spending $50 on it. Irrational deserves it.

I'll check it out. Thanks for all the suggestions bro. Always possible I missed soemthing so I'm glad someone has the time to make some suggestions. I am running the current version of DirectX but when I get home I'll double check.
MSCONFIG is another good idea, I'll see if there's anything hidden that's running otherwise.
you cant regain fps as in 05. even with tweaks, clean install & whatnot. its the game and im losing interest to play, but ill always play in matches/scrims. i dont like the new maps either :(
Silken 10-11-2004, 01:41 PM I was pretty down on the game during beta due almost primarily to the grappler and the odd quirks with skiing (like no carving), but I'm seeing a lot of good in it. The maps aren't great, but there will be lots of nice community maps soon, and at the very least a bunch of remakes in the immediate future.
Lots of little tiny negatives, but overall the game is very solid. I think we will be able to weather T:V's early months much better than T2. I've never seen so many long time tribers just disappear completely than after those first six, oh so depressing months of T2. I honestly don't know how I survived 18 months of T2 base. Must have been denial
I don't think that will happen this time around, and I think the big remaining issues will see patches within the next 6 months that will make everything right :D
