The issue here is mostly Red Tape and the fact that with any publisher, things have to go thru "QA" and the proper channels.. Even if IG had a pot of gold to give to every purchaser, they would still have to have it cleared thru VU...
This is unfortunate and as has been said, the only thing people can do is complain to the publishers, not the developers

This release feels like shades of tribes 2. Who dropped the ball on something as requiring the cd to be in the drive to run a dedicated server? Brilliant. If you ask me they should be giving away dedicated servers for free. People are donating computers and their bandwidth so that players who purchase the game can play and they screw them in such a manner. Way to go.

No. That is absolutely not the only thing that can be done.
You don't purchase the game. You send an email or letter to VUG saying "I'm not buying this game until you fix SecureROM and stand-alone server issues."
Make it very clear to the publishing company that they have done something to cause you to ignore their product. The only way to get an executive's attention is to wave money they can't have in front of their face.
as a consumer, the only power you have in the market is how you choose to use your money.

Not nessasaraly. A deluge of hate mail can let 'em know what the deal is too. Also, look at it this way, if people boycot T:V due to it's inclusion of SecuROM, the game floops (hurting Irrational more than anyone) but to VUG it just looks like the franchise is a failure and not worth continuing.
Remember, the up and ups at VUG aren't generally gamers... they're money guys. They see bottom lines without seeing all the myrade of issues that caused it that we the gamers know so well.
Take Enter The Matrix or Tron 2.0 as examples. Both flooped. Not because they were bad games or poorly designed, but because they were pushed out the door by the publisher before they were ready (by Atari in this case). Neither one will ever see the light of day again and the Dev houses for both have suffered for it.
VUG (and publishers in general) needs to know that if they don't treat their houses better, they will kill their own market.
Seriously... to let them know either E-mail them or post on their forums here: http://community.vugames.com/WebX?14@127.i8zodnWkRSe.2 988161@.efd3668

One last note:
Sorry fer coming on strong like that guys...
Thing is, I've got 10 years of various levels of industry involvment (from leading start-up design teams, to being head of an art department). I do have a better idea of what's going on that most of you folks.
I did mention that I'm specualting, but it's informed speculation not wild guesses.
It's a fact that VUG put SecuROM on the disks.
It's also a fact that Thrax said there wouldn't be SecuROM on the disks.
We know that SecuROM being on the disks was an amazingly stupid move since it requires the CD to be in the drive to run a dedicated server.
Given those facts, it's not hard to piece together what happened.
Besides, I invited Irritant to tell me to stfu if I was off base. ;)
Sometimes a lack of communication is more telling than a bold statment.
Anyway, the shaz-storm seems to have calmed down. I'd rather you guys bash me than Irrational anyway! Maybe next time I'll just post some really bad poetry and spare you folks my attempts to inform.
How's that sound?
