The friggin dedicated server REQUIRES a CD to start.

How unbelieveably LAME is that?

That really is not good.

Why release a (mostly) online game, then not support your server operators? Without good servers, this game will tank. See Swat3 Multi and many more.

This is sad. No standalone dedicated at release and now the dedicated requires a cd to start.

This needs a patch. Pronto.

sounds like a little "oops" to me.

Don't worry, you'll live.

I'd like to take a wild guess as to most T:V servers are dedicated or colocated with no physical access by the server admin possible. RDC or ssh being the only form of access. This is a big problem, not a little "oops".

Am I missing the point here... What is the problem? Just make an image of it and mount it.

(Yeah I know, I am missing something, just tell me what it is)

This is not an oops. This is a 'what do you mean, people aren't hosting 32 man servers on their cable modems?'

Oh wait, there's a server shop right around the corner... let me nip in there and physically install the dedicated server. Yeah right.

'Create and mount an image'?

1. Upload 4 CDs to remote server. Finish doctoral thesis in the meantime.
2. Convince host admins that you really aren't a warez runner.
3. Get a tool that mounts CD images and install.
4. Convince host admins that yes, you did buy the game.
5. Leave the CD mounted so you can run a dedicated server.
6. Pull out hair and run around throwing poo at the developers.

Yeah, no sweat bub.

The people that make these decisions can't have even the slightest clue about how to properly position a game for success. For representing such a large company, they certainly seem to make consistently perplexing decisions.

I can see how you'd need the key for the install, because you're basically installing the game. How do you know the key is being used? Have you started the server then tried to get online with the same key from another computer? How are you starting the server? From the gui or the command line?

Most games are have copy protection controls. Mounted images usually fail on CD checks. Perhaps I'm over-reacting and naively assume there is no copy protection on T:V.

You shouldn't have to upload two copies of the game.

Well none of the images I've done have failed the cd check...

At what point did I mention anything about a key?

I said the game when run as a server, does a CD check (copy protection).

This is incredibly lame.

And yes, it's run from a command line bat file I created. I'm not stupid. I've been running servers for Tribes since 1998.
