I would too, if I made a mistake this big.
jotun 10-06-2004, 02:45 PM I can see how you'd need the key for the install, because you're basically installing the game.you shouldn't NEED to install the whole game to run a dedicated server. most games have a separate dedicated server program that anyone can download for free and run
BitRaiser 10-06-2004, 02:48 PM I'm sure a stand alone dedicated server is in the works.
crouton 10-06-2004, 02:53 PM BitRaiser - you're a great guy, but 'in the works' just doesn't cut it.
I'm sure a stand alone dedicated server is in the works.
that's great. too bad they should have released it yesterday if they were wanting people to have servers up when people actually got home with the game.
G1ZM0 10-06-2004, 02:54 PM Sorry I just added the key thing in my head. I guess because a CD check just doesn't compute. I'm guessing this is a Serria/VU screw up. Don't they add the copy protection after the dev's are done?
Hopefully the decicated server will be out soon.
Got Haggis? 10-06-2004, 02:55 PM I wonder if those machines outside Dave G's office require the CD to run?
oh wait....thats a different game
(there was the same problem for closed beta)
BitRaiser 10-06-2004, 02:58 PM :D I'm a great guy! That makes my day. :p
Anyway, try to remember that this product was done during a real crunch. Moving up the released date without giving proper time to complete seems perty bone headed, but in truth we have no idea what sort of other factors are/were involved.
Anything from reserved manufacturing allocation, to distribution deals, to advertising campains, to legal battles with Valve could have caused a "We gotta get this out NOW!" reaction.
Hell, atleast the game WORKS!
Falhawk 10-06-2004, 02:59 PM I knew they had to rush to get the game working and sent out but you'd think that a game who's roots are SOLEY multiplayer would want to make it as easy as possible to get servers up.

What game isn't?
Trem_r 10-06-2004, 03:02 PM I'm not impressed IG. For a game which big draw is it's mulitplayer, you guys sure are making it as hard as possible for people to host servers. No linux server. No dedicated server files. Not to mention dedicated servers require a jesus machine just to run decently. Now you have audacity to require CD checks for dedicated servers? Let's not forget what a breeze it's going to be to remotely install the game.
Tribes 2 had problems with its multiplayer - UEs and other various problems, I was happy to see that TV wasnt following the same path. However, the fact that you guys made a solid game wont even matter if people cant host it with atleast some ease.
Truth be told: Fix your stuff. Remove CD checks for dedicate servers. Create dedicated server files, and please, try to work out a linux server.
-Geist- 10-06-2004, 03:02 PM They released a week early, when they could have waited and the standalone server stuff done(POSSIBLY, no idea what soon means when Menzo says it) in time for the release.
Wonderful job there.
If remote admins have to upload, I imagine that's going to cost even more than the server already costs, right?
CandyMan 10-06-2004, 03:03 PM It's the same thing i've been saying for months, they have put NO effing thought into the one key thing that will either build or break the ability for them to sell this damn game.. the servers to play on.
The admin functions never have worked worth a shazbot, they lack every feature but the most basic and least useful. kick, ban. whhoooo effing who.
The server itself is super unstable and constantly restarts, crashes and just plain freaks out.
Now, to top it off, they put a cd lock on it. sweet.
None of the servers i host will be put to retail until they decide to make something useful for the admins to work with.

They didn't release a week early.
edit: My bad, thinking of different dates
crouton 10-06-2004, 03:04 PM Hell, atleast the game WORKS!
At least the Single Player portion.... which is what we're all here for, eh? :)
-Geist- 10-06-2004, 03:06 PM They didn't release a week early.
Uh, yes, yes they did.
Falhawk 10-06-2004, 03:08 PM They didn't release a week early.
would you agree that releasing with this lack of dedicated server support is a bad move?
They didn't release a week early.
The release date is October 5th. There is no delay. Amazon is probably reporting the wrong date because we actually moved it UP a week a while back. At one point it was 10/12.
It's not any more. The release date is 10/5. I repeat, the release date is October 5th, 2004 in the United States. There is no spoon. Please remove your tinfoil hat.
There has been no change to the release date since it was announced. October 5th, 2004.
October 5th, 2004 is the release date.
