Virtual cd...i love you.
You have GOT to be kidding me!!!Coylter 10-06-2004, 02:17 PM Virtual cd...i love you. FantasticDamage 10-06-2004, 02:17 PM Well, I'll be waiting till a standalone dedicated server is released before buying my copy. I'll be damned if I have to play on any non-dedicated Cable/DSL crapbox servers. Then again, I may just buy it to play through the single-player, then go back to the demo for multiplayer. GIMPbeowulf 10-06-2004, 02:18 PM Yeah, this makes no sense. Might as well put the dedicated server app up for download, doesn't even need to be in the box. Just give it away. There will be good, dedicated servers, it is just the admins now have to jump through a few more unnecessary hoops. FantasticDamage 10-06-2004, 02:23 PM There will be good, dedicated servers, it is just the admins now have to jump through a few more unnecessary hoops. How are the admins who have no physical access to their rented servers gonna pull this off? I'm not trying to sound stand-offish, I'm actually curious. jsut 10-06-2004, 02:23 PM There will be good, dedicated servers, it is just the admins now have to jump through a few more unnecessary hoops. it's too bad that some of those admins aren't going to be able to jump through those hoops at all. Namely, people that rent a dedicated server that resides thousands of miles away. At least until there is a no-cd crack for the server anyway. Kerosene31 10-06-2004, 02:28 PM How are the admins who have no physical access to their rented servers gonna pull this off? I'm not trying to sound stand-offish, I'm actually curious. Right, but that isn't everyone. I didn't say it wasn't a problem, but you mentioned that we would only be playing from servers hosted on people's local cable modems. And things are nowhere near that bad. crouton 10-06-2004, 02:29 PM Fantastic - Upload the !4! CDs, use a program like Daemon Tools or Virtual CD to mount the CD so it shows up as a 'drive' in Windows, and then install / run dedicated server. That's all. Nice, good to know it can be done remotely. My old BFV clan had a rented server, and all we got was admin privledges, no remote desktop access or anything like that. I wasn't sure if this kind of thing was commonly allowed by server rental companies. Big Monkey 10-06-2004, 02:32 PM wow whos the llama that thought this would be a good idea KillerONE 10-06-2004, 02:33 PM I try to be as open minded as possible when it comes to decisions. I really try to see both sides of the equation. Unfortunately, the person that decided a CD check was a GOOD idea for a DEDICATED SERVER should be shot. This is absolutely unacceptable. IG, you're going down!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (j/k  but still, wtf??) Did 1.01 patch correct this maybe? You try patching first? Otherwise, damn, that stand-alone server better be out, like now. Kerosene31 10-06-2004, 02:34 PM Yeah, I see no point of it unless you are making the ded servers have a separate key, which if I am hearing correctly is not. crouton 10-06-2004, 02:34 PM Nice, good to know it can be done remotely. .....................even tually. You really tried uploading 4 CDs to anywhere over the standard broadband uplink? 256 up means you better bring a nice thick book or 3. jsut 10-06-2004, 02:36 PM cd check, and the server needs it's own unique key. i'm going to laugh if it needs it's a key for each instance of the game on the server. :x at least they are making different mistakes than were made with T2? BitRaiser 10-06-2004, 02:36 PM I said it sounds like a little oops in comparison to some of the BIG oopses I've seen. Atari's pulled some REAL boners. How about no CD keys in the boxes? Self distructing CDs that blow apart in the drive, anyone? Missing documentation or printed in the wrong language? How about gold editons that are incompatable with previous versions? Thems some BIG oopses. This one can get patched. Shoddy 10-06-2004, 02:37 PM Very not cool, hopefully fixed soon. Gandalf 10-06-2004, 02:38 PM Yeah, I see no point of it unless you are making the ded servers have a separate key, which if I am hearing correctly is not. I can not confirm (or deny) that installing the game on a box to act as a dedicated server will do any cd check/registration while the game is running. I can confirm, however, that it did, of course, require a cd key for install. Whether it is checked or not as a dedicated server - I can't say. I have not been able to use my same CDs from a computer as a client to test it. KillerONE 10-06-2004, 02:38 PM Better soon. No servers, means noone playing, means no fun, means noone is telling their friends to get it, meaning Tribes dies. (even if you CAN play, you'll be on some asshats cable connecting, getting pl'd and hpd'd to death. Again, not good for the game.) :) Slurp 10-06-2004, 02:39 PM This thread is worthy of a better title. If I was a dev, I would totally skip this thread. chop 10-06-2004, 02:41 PM I try to be as open minded as possible when it comes to decisions. I really try to see both sides of the equation. I'm doing dummy tests at home. Patching does nothing, it still asks for the CD. | ||
