Tahnit 10-01-2004, 03:22 AM Usually in almost every game of T:V on isle and cavern. The manable turrets are hardly used. They are not powerfull enough to warrent a team sacrificing a player in the field to man a turret.
They need to be stronger or have something that makes them more attractive to the defense.
TheRoDent 10-01-2004, 03:28 AM I think the point is that manning a turret is an inherently boring function in a game where everyone is flying around in the air, skiing over hills (without being able to carve) and launching discs at each other.
Sitting in a turret waiting for someone to come by is a bit like being the 'waterboy' for an awesome football team. You just sit there playing with yourself, until something comes along, start shooting, and then boom! - before you know it they're gone again and you're playing with your body parts again...
They might as well be automated or something. It'd be more effective and give HO something else to focus their green snot on, other than base-raping.
BitRaiser 10-01-2004, 03:29 AM I wouldn't be against maybe increasing the protection the turret offers to the gunner... I was just playing on cavern and doing a little HOing. Came to the enemy end and OH CRAP! Both turrets manned!! EEK!
Two mortar rounds later, both were dead.
I felt cheesy, to be honest.
Their firepower definatly doesn't need ramping up... they're perty damned effective. I wouldn't mind an increase the spread on the chaingun turret, but that would be a personal taste thing.
Tahnit 10-01-2004, 03:31 AM I say give them shields like the turrets in ut2k4 had.
Valisse 10-01-2004, 04:16 AM Even if you give them shields. the player controlling it is rarely hard to remove.
PowerSurge 10-01-2004, 04:51 AM Sneak up behind them, 2 nades and a disk later, they're history
KnightMare 10-01-2004, 04:58 AM I said they would be many many months ago.
Plague 10-01-2004, 05:40 AM It's a good thing the AI ignore teammates in the SP demo. I tried getting in one to shoot down a Pod, and the thing exploded after four seconds. Of course, I brought down the Pod easily, but still, it's ludicrous to think that engineers would bother building these things.
Polaris 10-01-2004, 07:36 AM Mannable turrets are perfect for times when you want to be kicked for spamming the flag on cavern.
mc-fine 10-01-2004, 10:40 AM I love the mannable turrets. The chain turret is pretty powerful. I would use them all the time just that most times on pubs you can't trust your teammates to guard the flag and take out cappers. So if I don't kill capper before he gets to flag then I have to jump out and try to cut him off from a stand still while he is already zooming back to base.
With the chain turret on Wintersuck you can keep Fighter pods and bombers from ever crossing to your side of the map. Turret will tear them up so easily. Cappers on route from the side of the turret will get eaten up easy. One time I pretty much discouraged cappers or enemies from attacking from the side of the map with the chain turret. On Cavern its also very useful for defense.
The only things that confuse me is sometimes I get shot at in the turret and get no damage. Looks like the shield is taking the damage. Other times I am easily shot out of the turret. I know I have entered grens and disks to ppl in the Cavern turret before and they didn't die. I dunno maybe the base gen went down or something or theres a bug. Also leading with the turret can be a little difficult at long range.
NAT Mav 10-01-2004, 10:52 AM I agree, they are pretty useless unless manned, and even then they aren't much of a threat when countered. The player controlling them is a sitting duck and is easily dispatched without even harming the turret.
Kerosene31 10-01-2004, 10:58 AM You hit it, basically there are better things to be doing. If you want to play d, you would be better off guarding the flag or the base.
Virtus 10-01-2004, 12:35 PM Only good thing about them:
Right hand: mouse
Left Hand: Pizza / Drink
Thriky 10-01-2004, 01:24 PM What you have to really understand is that the mannable turrets are at their most effective when used to counter vehicles. Getting pissed off by that tank, rover or pod that's harassing your defense? Simply jump into one of the turrets and shoot them down - it works very efficiently.
On players it's far less effective, so don't just sit in one waiting for a player to appear. Just jump into one quickly if you spot a vehicle.
