If I load up cavern then stand on my flag facing the other flag I will get 47fps with everything on low expect fog, which is at ultra high.If I switch my resolution from 1024 to 640 I get the same FPS.Shouldnt my FPS go up?

AMD Barton 2500+
Radeon 9600 PRO 128
Soltek SL-75MRN-L
Windows XP Pro SP1
Corsair 512 PC2700

I found the source of your problem, but 47fps isn't bad at all for what you are running.

There are already some good cards avalible on Newegg (http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?descr iption=14-128-197&depa=0) but if you can wait for the less expensive Radeon X700 or Geforce 6600 $200 AGP flavors to be avalible, upgrade to one of those -unless you have the money for a high end card or a new system entirely.

Edit: missing words put in; spell check later.

Does anyone have anything resembling an ETA on the 6600 cards? Im trying to hold out for one of them *sigh*

Its the ut2004 engine, fps doesnt change at all on most systems when changing resolution. dont ask me why but its well known in the ut2004 community.

On my GF's Dell

P4 2.8GHz
512MB
Radeon 9600XT

run the game at 2048X1536 /High detail= 0-2fps
run the game at 640X480 /High detail = 40fps

That sounds about right to me.

*note this test was done by "start mp-isle" in the console, not online.

Please ignore the other twits in the thread, your fps isnt increasing with resolution drop because you are CPU limited. In otherwords your CPU is not feeding geometry to your card fast enough for your card to draw faster than 47fps @ 1024 in that location. Your fps doesn't increase with resolution drop because your card is spending periods of time idle waiting for the processor @ 1024 anyway, and a resolution drop only relives strain from the video card, it has no effect on CPU load.

Try keeping the resolution the same and reducing drawing distance / world detail or some other geometry detail. These settings will reduce the load on the processor and you should see an FPS increase. (World detail may not have a visible effect in the area you're standing to compare with).

Also note that since the test you're using for FPS is very limited in scope, it is possible that you are not CPU limited in an actual game once lighting effects and projectiles start flying around. In which case the resolution change would have an effect, it just wouldn't be visible by standing still in the entrance to cavern on an empty server.

There's nothing wrong with that video card. The top of the line cards right now don't even offer that large of a performance boost over what he's running.

With my 9800 Pro I can have it at low or ultra high and still pump about 80 FPS. Virtually no difference.

This man speaks the truth.

I have the same system pretty much cept my 2500+ is oc'd to 3200 speeds. I turn on bump mapping and looking out from flag on Cavern is 30 fps. I turn it off and I jump to 60-65. Those kinds of effects will tax your video card.

At that particular point in Cavern you are CPU limited.

I don't know guys, I have a 1600+ and I still got pretty high FPS on all maps including cavern.

try this... load up Cavern and stand behind the flag stand looking out toward the other base and see what the fps is like. Your card is considerably faster than a 9600 pro but I bet your fps is lower than usual at that point in Cavern.
