Looking for an answer from somebody who's been hosting servers or the developers, mainly.

Anyway, over at Wireplay (http://www.wireplay.co.uk) we're looking into getting a number of T:V servers set up, preferably around four servers running 16 slots. The hardware for the box is yet to be purchased, and we're basically wondering what kind of strain a T:V server will put on it.

At the moment, the set up is:
Athlon 3200 XP Barton
1GB memory
nforce 2 mobo

All I'm wanting to know really is whether or not this will support the desired amount, and if not what will. We're willing to lay down the goods for the community, but need to get this right. We don't want to end up paying out and then realising that the games choke when all servers are filled.

If you can give an educated estimate, that'll be good too. I need all the info I can get as of now, given the charming task of resarch. ;)

Thanks for any help offered etc.

you should wait until the demo is released and then ask ppl.

Yeah, I'm aware that the specifications will probably lower slightly due to optimization and such. I'd like to get a general idea as quickly as possible though.

Failed, Bridude.

The 5150 servers are some of the best ones out there, and they do 20 people with a 3GHz (probably P4, they don't say) and OC3. Considering the 3200+ is just a bit behind the P4 3GHz, you should do swell. You'll probably run even better if Irrational puts out a dedicated server program.

Thanks babzo. How many servers do 5150 squeeze of a box?

Thanks babzo. How many servers do 5150 squeeze of a box?I believe he's said before that it's 1 to a box.

Yeah, on the beta coding I've heard that one to a box unless you're running a dual operton amd64 rig, then you can get two or three....

Let's hope optimized netcode makes a huge difference or we'll probably all see a lot fewer servers out there :|

So what kind of bandwidth is needed for a 16 - 20 person server?

1 meg or so before they start lagging out. Seems the bottle neck for the beta is in the processor.

Jeez, one 20 person server to a box? That's pretty nasty. I do hope that the netcode is significantly improved.

Connection is no problem, we're at a major ISPs datacentre. It's just the hardware that needs worrying about.

1 meg or so before they start lagging out. Seems the bottle neck for the beta is in the processor. That's not too bad... i have a 5mbit ul/dl connection that I've been thinking about putting a TV server on. Sounds like I need to upgrade the server box since it's only an XP2200 or something.

Our host has an OC192 connection with the server running Dual Xeon 3.0 GHZ processers and 2 GB ram.

We host 20 with no problem but anymore tends to cause problems.

20-man server runs fine on (but eats) an XP2200/512.

I can't run more than one 20-man server on a P4 3.2 without being CPU-limited.

That's pretty bad. Irrational, can we expect improvements to this? We really want to help support the game and its community, but if it's this intensive on our hardware then it's simply not an affordable option. We may be advocates of charity, but we're not limitless. :(

We are running a 16-slot server on a 2400+ at about 90% load...everything above isn't bearable. 20 on a 2200+ is quite unrealistic.

You got me! It's actually a 2500+. And it does play fine. :roller:

We would never recommend running more than 1 game server on a single box. They are P4, 3Ghz with 1GB of RAM for each server.

Sticky?

I take it from the lack of an answer the devs aren't willing or able to answer this. Fair enough, I guess.

I must urge you to consider making a seperate server hosting client with dramatically optimized resource usage though, Irrational. I really want to help out your game's community, and am willing to lay out the money to do so, but it can't be a one-way system.
