Another failed attempt at being funny there. What is it with you Vetē+ people and scumming up people's threads? Piss the hell off already.

Thanks babzo. How many servers do 5150 squeeze of a box?

No problem, but what the hell is a babzo?

And what was the last game you served for? It's been a while since you could serve multiple games off one box.

Jeez, one 20 person server to a box? That's pretty nasty. I do hope that the netcode is significantly improved.

Connection is no problem, we're at a major ISPs datacentre. It's just the hardware that needs worrying about. The netcode is fine. On a 20 person server on cavern, I watched the performance counter and outbound bandwidth was around 80KB/s on average, so figure about 4KB/s per player, and figure out your needs from there.

Cpu utilization is usually between 35-50% on an average map, and memory usage sits at around 256mb (this is on a 20 person server.)

Your milage may vary. Thanks to Dread, the servers run a pretty clean configuration, meaning the game exe itself is the only thing really putting any load on the box itself.

You will probably want to run some kind of infinite spawn app to restart the game when it goes down. I believe someone posted one a while back, and according to the one we use, our East 1 server has had to restart the executable 20 times since whenever it was started (not sure when that was, will have to code that in when I get off my ass.)

Just to reiterate, the servers are all p4 3.0GHz, 1024mb ram, and an OC-3.

I just rebuilt our server with an AMD64 3200+ 1mb L2 - On a k8v se deluxe.

It runs great but may be a bit out of some peoples budgets :o

I was thinking about doing this myself. What kinda cpu, and memory usage does it use?

Demo build had any impact on how much you can get out of hardware?

We'll probably have to initially limit our server number at first if it really is going to take all that hardware just to run one. It'd be nice if a seperate, "barebones" dedicated server client could be released to use optimum resources though.

And yes my hardware/server ratio knowledge is a little outdated. It's been a few years.

Demo seems to be a little easier on the CPU -- 10% or so Maybe 15%? Anyone else have a guess?

heh, hell I bet half u efferz are hosted at my work :p

I still think its stupid they didnt put out a linux server tho :(

sounds like u could actually run one of these bad boys on a T1

what a effing coincidence, when has the last time a game came out you could actually serve off a T1? Not like I would put a 2k3 box up to admin myself on anything faster anyway.

20-man server runs fine on (but eats) an XP2200/512.

I can't run more than one 20-man server on a P4 3.2 without being CPU-limited.

Are you serious?

This is NOT good. I ran a server for the longest time during the beta demo ( some of you may have played on it, ECGNetwork.Com T:V Server ) and it maxed out a P4 2.4B ( but still didnt lag, very odd ) and didnt use up that much bandwidth. I figured this was just an effect of the beta demo.

I'm not so much concerend about the bandwidth as I am the CPU. If you are saying it maxes out a P4 3.2ghz with just 20 people then its unrentable from a GSP perspective.

I'm obviously a little behind in the times here, so I'll go ahead and ask. Firstly, what is the most ideal number of players for a server these days? 16? 18? 20? What do people prefer in your server administrating experience so far?

As for hardware, what is the optimum hardware for running that amount? Will running two t:v servers from one box be realistically possible (even if cut down to 16 players)? If so, what hardware will be required?

Sorry to spout off so many questions at once, but as I said - I'm out to research and this seems like the best place to do it. You don't have to answer all my questions, but since there seems to be a lot of conflicting advice in this thread I need to ask.

I think it's worth trying 2 on a 3.2 again. The demo seems a little better, as I said before. This thread is a mix of pre- and post-demo server requirements, so read close :-)
