[Feedback] Flat sided Cull?

This is an issue I haven't seen brought up and it's been buggin me fer awhile now.

It may be a more noticeable issue for me with my underpowered video card (not everyone is made o money, ya know!), but I noticed that there is defiantly a flat culling plain being used by T:V.

So?

Well, since it's a plane set at a fixed distance, you can actually see ferther on the sides than you can dead ahead. It get's annoying as hell to spot a little IFF just off to the side, swing around to get a bead on it, then loose it because you shifted the culling plane!

This is a standing issue with UT04 as well. I'm just wondering if any thought has been given to a more complex cull?

It's a standing issue with most FPS. It's not a big issue in Tribes, where the speed of play overrides any advantage you might get.

In a more tactical game (slower) it might be an issue (and is in some of em) but this means paying quite a lot of attention to the clipping or culling distance. A flat plane is easily coded and simple to calculate on the fly. A curved (or even the simplest angled 9 faceted shape) would take a couple of times the processing power to implement.

9?
If you can handel it the same way as a mesh, I would gun fer 4. You just gotta be a little creative. ;)

It might not be totally accurate, but atleast the middle point of your view would have the most range on it.

I know the problems involved, I was just curious if Irrational had given tweaking the cull a go or not. It's not a *major* issue, but in stand offs (specifical when your manning a turret and watching for emeny aircraft) it can get hella annoying.
I also can remember seeing an issue with it in T1 or 2. That could have had something to do with IFFs and actual player models being disassosiated, tho.

A workaround exists:

1. Go to store.

2. Purchase better video card.

3. Remove shazbotty video card from system.

4. Install shiny new video card in system.

5. Repeat as necessary until satisfied.

Hmm, the problem would still exist on any video card, it's the code bro, not the card.

It's not worth dealing with.

It's more of an issue in, say, Americas Army.

Lol... Kinda reminds me of this time I was at my uncle's house and he made my little cousin go to bed. My cousin got all mad and asked what the REASON was that he had to go to bed and why his dad was the 'boss of him,' etc.

My uncle's reply: "Well, when you're a parent and you have a kid you can give him the exact same reason I'm telling you now."

My cousin: "What reason?"

My uncle: "The one I just told you. Now go to bed."

I almost pissed my pants. It kinda sucked because my cousin thought I was laughing at him I when really wasn't. He wanted to know what was so funny and the only answer I could give him was, "Exactly!"

This problem was brought up a while ago, it was talked about in this (http://www.tribalwar.com/forums/showthread.php?t=317092) thread. The basic problem is that in order to get the fog to be dependent on distance from the player it requires a hit to performance.

In a game like tribes that is so fast paced, the gameplay is either affected very little or not at all because of the flat fog line.
