Santa 10-21-2004, 03:19 AM Yeah, I haven't noticed any severe hits from using statics. I've been working on a static mesh of the Damnation base and even un-optimized around 3000 polys (which really isn't much more than a player model) I've gotten no drop in performance.

True. But with lots of other players models (players) and disc shots/mortars where they always fire (flag) I think it helps to keep different textures to a minimum as well as meshes. I flew through the base and my fps does go down...thats by myself.

static mesh is designed for FASTER rendering, to be accurate.
indeed, lots of textures can add up but the entire point of mesh is that it renders faster, especially for objects that repeat alot.
Blitz 10-21-2004, 03:54 AM Hey pros. I know you guys respect people learning on their own, and I really dont want to ask too many questions and bog you all down, so how about just this one question. When I "subtract" a space and create a room with say...the cube. I am doing this by hitting the yellow diomand. Now when I do that it becomes WHITE. I dont know why, but it does now. It didnt used to , and I dont know what I did to make it do that. Now when I try to apply a texture, it will not apply.
Suggestions? I am willing to learn, but this makes it impossible for me to build anything.
Oh shazbot, my bad. Secondly I really just cant figure out on my own how to make Terrain? Directions or link to instructions ?

Register. Go to downloads on the left hand column. Choose unreal. Lots of video tutorials there.
Senty 10-21-2004, 04:09 AM oOOH NICE going to watch them tomorrow, have an idea for a map but no time right now, bleh.
Blitz 10-21-2004, 04:10 AM I did already. Watched 4 of them, dosnt explain my first question. And I havent gotten to "terrain" in any of the videos.
Btw, your map kicks ass I played in it today with about 6 people. Fun as hell nice touches.
Question though, are the hills outside the focal point of the map supposed to be jagged or have you just not gotten that far yet?
Blitz 10-21-2004, 04:19 AM Ok, I got it to run and here is the thing.
once I 'test' the level, I can see the textures that I know I placed, however when I am in the editor it is STILL just a white cube. Therefore I wont be able to know what I am doing the entire time, especially when it gets larger. So could someone please answer this, I havent come across a solution elsewhere.

Right click the toolbar for the Perspective Viewport. Make sure that "Mode" is set to "Texture Mode" or "Lighting Mode."
Blitz 10-21-2004, 04:56 AM God damn thank you so much.
Now if you could? The terrain I just cant find the "build terrain" button. Or whatever I do to get terrain actually built onto the map.

Well you have to hit the 'build all button' on top. But first make sure you have a texture layer (like grass, rock). Its the 2nd tab in the terrain tool. Also I'm assuming you have a heightfield (1st tab). Also you should have a sunlight.
?B-MAN 10-21-2004, 05:13 AM Note that is not DX, that is PX... so don't expect it to be the same...
I stand corrected. Regarding the fogging distance. it seems that the bases arent too far from each other but the viewable distance is pretty limited (regarding santas dangerous crossing map). Is this just a limit of the unreal engine. Sorry if this is a mapping for dummies question but I have never dabbled in map making.
Also, I know the oob grid can be extended, but is it possible to eliminate it completely or make it passable like the T2 grid? I know you could possibly make the grid huge and fit your map inside, but on some smaller maps (All TV maps seem smaller) sometimes in a frantic moment you can hit the damn wall like a bird flying into a window. If I shoot my disc at the grid it will pass and the disc will hit anything beyond the grid so it doesnt seem like its a hard edge on the map.

nice, using t2 textures?

The terrain tutorial there is quite good.
Xionic 10-21-2004, 01:52 PM Someone should port over the t2 DX terrain, the t1 is tiny as hell. It'd be nice to see a comparison.
There would be no reason to since you can scale the terrain in TVEd to any size you want.
nice, using t2 textures?
No. My own rebuilt T1 textures.
Like destroyer said my map is Perilous Crossing not Dangerous Crossing and will not be like DX. Imagine T1 style bases (and various reminiscent sections of T1 bases) mixed with a map style like Harvester but without the base clutter and maybe a little smaller.
Jamslice 10-21-2004, 04:16 PM yea I thought they looked like t1 textures, but so high res!
dudeman 10-21-2004, 05:09 PM drool drool drool :D
keep those alphas and betas coming
if i wasn't working on far cry modding right now I'd help you, but as you know any one editor has a huge learning curve and getting used to technique so I can't just jump in right yet
pyrot3chnic 10-21-2004, 05:52 PM There would be no reason to since you can scale the terrain in TVEd to any size you want.Nice, didn't know this. Mr. Santa, what do you say?
Frozer!!! 10-21-2004, 07:18 PM Copy TV_CD_DVD.exe to TV.exe and it will work
What do you mean by just copying and pasteing these exe's? I tried copying and pasteing one shortcut icon to another and it didnt work, im doing something worng. Can you describe what you mean please? :)
