Europe is not the US, and while it's easy to complain about not having a DVD version, you guys don't have to deal with retailers in the US. It's hard enough to get them to even stock a game, but getting them to carry two different versions? Not going to happen, especially at this time of year. There's only so much shelf space out there so we make a choice - ship on DVD only and risk losing 50%+ of our potential audience or bit the bullet and ship on CD. I didn't major in business and I'm no math wizard, but it seems like an easy decision to me.

I believe there will come a time when we will ship only on DVD but it's not going to be this year and it probably won't be next year either. 2006? Maybe.I see where you're comming from, and I don't disagree with you, but am I being unreasonable to still request it? So you can't sell it directly through the B&M retailers; keep a small batch for the US, sell it directly from VUGames/Amazon/non-B&M, maybe even call it a collector's edition or whatever and charge $5 more. There are at least a small, but dedicated group that wants to buy it; you could find a way to sell it if you're dedicated enough.:)

PS Seriously, who's going to have a machine powerful enough for T:V, but not have a DVD drive? And you still haven't answered why the Euros get the DVD version

I guess the euro's get DVD because the euro retailers didn't have a problem with it? Just an assumption tho....

Hmm, well I was looking forward to pre-order in the US, but tbh, I doubt there's gonna be more than 2 CDs if at all, so I can't really see the problem.

P.S. Nyah nyah! (that's what we get for not participating in the closed beta :P)

Maybe more people buy stuff online in Europe. I live in the UK and haven't bought overpriced games in a store for a few years now. And it's a good job I got UT2004 on DVD as I was constantly re-installing it because of bugs in the early patches.

Oh come on, that's just a bit too forward thinking. As much as people love to hate Steam, it might actually force other publishers out of their cardboard box on shelf only mentality.

Tribes: Vengeance will not be released on DVD in the US. I just found out that it is being released on DVD in Europe though. So we can just import the European DVD?

DVDs are more expensive(lots more) and take more time to burn. Of course that is just from a consumer stand point, don't know about industrial power buys or large volume DVD press costs. There is NO difference in material cost for pressing a DVD instead of a CD. You'll wind up paying 5x the cost for materials to release the game on CD instead of DVD.

I'm sure if Sierra/BUG got their collective heads out of their asses and released a limited DVD version through online retailers they would SELL OUT.

No wonder VUG fires everybody they buy. They don't have the foresight to make intelligent decisions when it comes to marketing, and other companies profit from it.

No, Im sure he never has...

Well then why dont you use your wealth of video game distribution experience and help them get their asses for them, then?

 that's what I thought...

 that's what I thought...Why should I have to once again demonstrate their lack of foresight? If you read posts in the last thread I made regarding the idea of a special Christmas DVD release, I provided sufficient evidence to demonstrate the economic feasibility of a DVD release, as supported by Amazon's own sales figures.

The person that made the decision to offer the Europeans a DVD version should be given the job of his/her US counterpart.

Well, this is just my guess why...

US retailers DEMAND copy protection before selling a game. CD copy protection is probably technically cheaper/easier to incorporate into CDs than DVDs. Europe retailers don't have those types of demands as they are either A) more knowledgable about copy protection schemes (and the fact that they don't work) or B) don't care, they are out to please the customer.

Until US retailers (and some developers/publishers) come to the realization that CD copy protection doesn't work, we'll probably be stuck with CDs.

The most effective copy protection is CD key authorization from a master server tied to an account. One of the few T2 things that worked right. It certainly cut down on piracy (and adoption by the T1 crowd). T2 had really weak CD copy protection - mainly to pacify the retailers, but wasn't needed at all.

With the US, it's probably more of an issue of concern of alienating non DVD-ROM drive owners; it took MS past 30 disks before they released Office on a CD, for example.
