Origim 09-05-2004, 08:01 PM In Tribes 2, I was guilty of enjoying the classic mod. I used to be either a flag capper or flag defender.
With T:V, flag capping is pretty much the same, except you will be better if you learn how to use the Graple hook. However, defence mechanics have shifted.
Here is what I currently do:
Load up a Heavy with Mortar, Burner and a Chaingun. Pack- speed pack. On the way to the flag, I usually grab a turret. When at the flag, I deploy the turret, find a good vantage point, and wait for cappers. When I see a capper approaching, I engage the speed pack (for weapon turbo) and shoot the flag with Burner. At this point, the enemy decides to either (A) get the flag and light up on fire, or (B) disengage the flag and retreat back to the start of cap route to attempt again. In case of A, I get the Chaingun out, and TRY to hit the enemy (unlike in T2, I can't hit well with CG anymore). In case of B, I get the Mortar and try to finish the enemy.
Unfortunately, this method still makes me miss more than half of the cappers. I need suggestions on how to defend the flag.

oh and lots of turrets
Wilf Brim 09-05-2004, 08:21 PM Some thoughts that seem to be working for me..
Heavy armor is (contrary to a post here) more useful than in T:2. Although not quite so impervious to injury, you are MUCH faster, and as such can a) avoid getting shot as much b) are more likely to catch a flag carrier.
The Fusion Mortar is your best friend. You just need to get VERY good with judging how far your shots are going to go, and where the flag carrier is headed. On some of the beta maps (Cavern comes to mind) there are natural choke points: that is there you can blow folks up. I like to take a position near (but not too near) the flag, where I can get a good feel for incoming enemies. The idea is to time your mortar shot so it arrives and explodes about the time the potential flag stealer arrives. Very hard to do, but very much fun when it works. Flag stays, and thief ends up in many pieces.
On smaller maps other weapons are more important. I seem to like the burner and (of course) spin disc. Try and find place where carriers have to go over you once, and by you the other way. You may not kill them the first time through, but give enough damage the first time through either a teammate or you can kill them before they get home.
CombatWombat 09-05-2004, 08:33 PM I've found the quickest thing that stops me from capping is the burner-used as a flak cannon sort of thing. Set the cappers intended path (NOT THE FLAG) on fire and even if he grabs he burns and falls into the ocean.
RedHerring 09-05-2004, 08:36 PM I've had extremely good success on Winterlake and Emerald with the buckler. All you need to do is be aware of someone lining up for a grab, then you run straight at the flag. Works about 4/5 times if you make contact. The only problem is if they spam the flag area before capping, for which the only solution I can think of (which I have not tested) is getting a energy pack and staying away from the flag and then boosting into it when the capper comes.
I'm going to start trying to see if shooting the buckler and BBing is more or less effective then using the buckler as a shield and BBing.
Spiderman 09-05-2004, 08:39 PM Grenade spam the flag with hands by tapping then disc, easy fast simple

I just blocked 4 cappers in a row on Emerald, using Medium/Shield/Buckler...
I simply engaged the shield pack to reduce spam dmg, and -stood- in the cappers way. It was a kill twice, and the other 2 times the capper was recoiled back enough to disc/nade/chain... but the real killer when he was recoiled was that it was enough time for my entire team to CG whore him. :-)
RedHerring 09-05-2004, 09:10 PM Depending on how heavy the offense is, I either take shield or repair. Shield if I'm getting housed, but repair otherwise to help with D.
-DtF-XandraX 09-05-2004, 09:17 PM Mines
Turrets (with repairers)
Base turrets
HoF grappled to the stand
MoF grappled to the stand with buckler out
D Sniping
Burner spamming on the flag
Grenades & Mortars
Usual LD tactics of disc & chain
Packs - speed pack for enormous firepower, energy pack to catch up to cappers, shield pack to allow diskjumping, repair pack to also allow diskjumping
Origim 09-05-2004, 09:21 PM HoF grappled to the stand
MoF grappled to the stand with buckler out
OMG. This is a great idea! I didn't want to stand on the flag, as I knew that the concussion force of the disk would push me off anyway... but I completely forgot about the hook! This game may have it's downs, but it does encourage creativity!
*Runs off to try this*

I did that to you on Winterlake:P
And Yea my HoF loadout is disc burner and mortar, with repair pack so i can repair myself even when im fighting. Also this allows me to repair turrets/LD
CombatWombat 09-05-2004, 09:40 PM I did that to you on Winterlake:P
To be fair I was the only offense at all. I'm not so sure it would work if all the supposed vet players on passworded severs would get their act together and clear.

nah u werent the only offense. osd was also trying to cap and someone else......forget the name though
GreeD 09-05-2004, 10:22 PM Buckler. Fix this to reflect a kill for a bb please. thx
DigitalFiction 09-05-2004, 10:25 PM Just because you see this in the stands, it doesn't mean you spell the word that way.

Zxqv8 09-05-2004, 10:33 PM Medium+Buckler is just great for flag defense, right up until they land a disc right at your feet and you're blasted so far away that you can't chase. What you need is a few people who are halfway decent at body blocking with the buckler and at least one heavy for fire support.
Of course, I'm sure other ways work, but lots of buckler blocking is quite effective.

As stated above, Grapple yourself to the ground. :)
Zxqv8 09-05-2004, 10:43 PM Well, I've done that, and I end up ungrappled. And its a completely useless strategy on cavern, isle, and for the most part winterlake too. Once you get nailed with a direct disc, you're blasted off the stand (due to the elasticity of the rope) to a point where the rope just breaks.
GreeD 09-05-2004, 10:47 PM As stated above, Grapple yourself to the ground. :)
Oh I love this, easy targets stuck on the ground.
You BB in the air not on the ground, and what happends if he grabs the flag? Hope you have a teammate ready to chase? Hell no man fire that boost from the engy pack and chase that ho-momma down. The thrill of the chase.
Whats up with Emerald anyway? I can base to base cap this without touching the ground no sweat, almost to easy of a map but fun as hell.
StickMan9000 09-05-2004, 10:55 PM Well, so far I've just been a HOF with Disk, CG, and Mortar with a Repair Pack and a Deployed Repair Station near by. I car repair the station, my self, and the staion can repair me and friendly cappers.
I've found this to work quite well as long as you don't run outta ammo. Bodyblock well and keep repairing and you're fine.
But...
Mines
HoF grappled to the stand
MoF grappled to the stand with buckler out
I never would have thought of this. You're my hero.
Must incorperate this into current strat.
