kwolf 09-05-2004, 04:11 PM First off, awesome job! Congrats. to Irrational and everybody else involved. Tribes is back! This is nothing, nothing, nothing like the T2 beta -- game is stable, bugs are fixable, gameplay is there.
Now, some feedback on heavies (I have only had about 8 hrs of butt time on T:V, so this is early feedback).
I have seen some posts that heavies are too weak and that mortars are too weak. I am not sure I agree 100% with those posts.
I think the issue with heavies is the way skiing is implemented. Rather than it being an autojump situation where you basically are given momentum in the direction you are traveling, it's more like you are on ice, so you get momentum in the direction of any moment that comes along to perterb you. That makes it too easy to knock a heavy off their ski.
I think that heavies should be given a bit more momentum and a bit more "mass" if you will -- requiring a more forceful moment to push them off their ski.
Also, you could buff the mortar a bit. :)

Or some Really Large Green person.
Should be H-O, H-O, H-O!
Fidelio 09-05-2004, 04:56 PM i just joined with the open betaon friday so i'm providing early feedback as well but i did play HO for [SES] in T1 and T2. my take on the heavies are the skiing is messed. the mortar seems fine to me although i'm used to a little more arc in the projectile. i have no opinion thusfar about the strength of the armor other than let's not forget in the other two games they were easy to kill as well so i don't mind dying often playing heavy.
overall i think the heavy is fine with the exception of the skiing. the heavy with the right person at the controls should be able to carry more momentum and ski faster than a light. i haven't found this to be the case so far in T:V.
i know large and small objects fall at the same rate but if you've ever seen a rock slide, you know the boulders come tumbling down the hillside much faster than the small rocks.
terebra 09-05-2004, 04:57 PM The biggest problems w/ ho is the maps. They are too bumpy, they need to be more bowl like. WL terrain is the biggest offender along w/ cavern.
You get knocked off your intended route and you might as well ctrl-k
SKnight 09-05-2004, 05:00 PM I would prefer the mortar to go farther in T:V. It doesn't seem to go quite as far shooing parallel to the ground as it does in T1 or T2.

Well they shouldn't make skiing easy. I think the maps are fine right now. All you have to do is find routes and hit them right. Improv skiing is still very much possible but a lot harder than t1/t2, imo.. at least for now.
VaporTrail 09-05-2004, 05:05 PM If you're just trying to ski in Cavern you're doing it wrong. Cavern was built for the grappler.
terebra 09-05-2004, 05:06 PM what im saying is that skiing is too unforgivable
you shouldnt get punched in the face each time you missed your spot...
Flatscan 09-05-2004, 05:09 PM The skiing is *fine*.
Higher skill requirement = better game
pyrot3chnic 09-05-2004, 05:09 PM Well at the scale T:V is being played now, a punch in the face is warranted. You can usually reach an enemy base by only touching the ground 2 or 3 times. If you mess one up, you deserve it. However, when the community starts making larger maps, this will start taking a larger effect, but that is where the great will be seperated from the good.
terebra 09-05-2004, 05:11 PM you still dont get it
the ground has sharp bumps in it for no reason
pyrot3chnic 09-05-2004, 05:12 PM So avoid them.. what's your point?
There isn't one set route you can take there are plenty of clean routes on all 4 maps..
A3YROldGirl 09-05-2004, 05:23 PM what im saying is that skiing is too unforgivable

Shouldnt you? Any retard can Hit a route in T2classic or T1. In t2 base you had to learn routes and learn them well or it really was time to Ctrl-K.
However, I gotta agree the heavy is a little too nerfed IMHO for a fun-style game. My fix would be to increase damage and forcefeedback from the DJ. This way only a shielded light could DJ without killing itself (make the effing hopeless shield pack a little more useful) and could make it easier for an HO that fuxed it's route to get back on track (with a little damage cost for being a retard and messing it in the forst place).
VaporTrail 09-05-2004, 05:27 PM Yeah... when there's a selection of larger maps, getting "punched in the face" mid map is not what I want to wind up having done to me.
Granted, I'm not among the hyper1337 HO, but having a map that only the best of the best can successfully navigate kinda kills the concept of "competition".
pyrot3chnic 09-05-2004, 05:33 PM Well it also motivates other players to get to that level.. I don't see the point of a map where any joe schmoe can dominate like the top tier player.

"Dominate like the top tier player."
The concept of some nub able to play any map as well as the best HO in the game seems an utter impossibility, or a map that is simple to the point of stupidity.
Being able to successfully navigate the map, as opposed to having to be "the best in the game" to do so, is what I'm getting at. There will always be "advanced" routes that lowly "un1337" HO can't hit right, but having routes that they can hit will keep them interested in the game, and possibly GET better.
pyrot3chnic 09-05-2004, 06:40 PM Well, right, but some people seem to whine first and try solving the problem later. Looking for routes is not hard, anyone can do it.
But you're right, navigating shouldn't be near impossible.
terebra 09-06-2004, 03:31 PM core of the problem for those that still didnt get it:
