Amadeus 09-02-2004, 08:44 AM remove points from ctf, problem solved
Points are what makes the individual player try to get better so he can inflate his ego and brag about his skills, awaking jealousy in other players, who in turn will do their best to get better too.
And by individual player I mean anyone who comes from a less team oriented game than Tribes (which is just about all of them).

You don't have to be a "point-whore" to want to know how you stack up vs other players on a server.
According to your argument.. why even have team points. "Points are what makes a team try to get better so it can inflate it's ego and brag........"

Sounds good to me. I remember an early version of Natural Selection had no individual points, you just played to help your team and win the game.

You don't HAVE to be a point-whore, but some people already are, and those people will be disappointed if there is no way for them to show off. The reward for getting better is a spot for your name in the after-map stat screen, and there's a lot of people who are motivated by that.
CombatWombat 09-02-2004, 02:24 PM My complaint with the points is that they are not, and will never be an accurate reflection on your contribution to the team (especially if you're playing a losing game).
I've found many times I'll be on a team with ZERO offense. I'll try my damn hardest to clear and cap all by my self, and usually end up with a score of absolute zero.
Zero is a silly score for someone trying to help their team while everyone else plays Rover Racer.
I too played that early NS version with no individual points, and remember how it became a point-whore 'omg you stole my kill' fest when they were added.
VaporTrail 09-02-2004, 02:45 PM I've been "Best Killer" in a game that I lost by a dozen or so caps. Does it mean I point whored, or that I was the only person bothering to defend the flag?
Amadeus 09-02-2004, 02:49 PM Well, if you work for your team, then why do you care about your personal score?
If someone plays to get the highest score, he usually doesn't give a shazbot about his team as that would hinder his point-whoring.
Personal scores are to represent the skill of the player as an individual, not as a teamplayer. If you were trying to clear the flag for your teammates, then you sacrificed your personal scores in favor of your team by going into battle with no chance of winning.
BFGanksta 09-02-2004, 02:52 PM Teams don't truely exist outside of comp and PUs. The majority of pub teams are just ppl that point whore.

.
well ok now we know how you play
VaporTrail 09-02-2004, 02:56 PM Well, if you work for your team, then why do you care about your personal score?
Because I'm playing for fun, and I want to know if what I did was difficult, or just another regular ho-hum day.
Right now, sniper headshots, and MA's have style points. IMO buckler kills, MA GL nades, MA Mortars (x3), and others possibly should have a style point attached.
Amadeus 09-02-2004, 03:02 PM True, the scoring system needs some refining. The key would be to make it so that you get points only if you did something that most possibly helped the team too. That way even the point whores would do something that is at least remotely useful for their teams.
poony128SCREW 09-02-2004, 03:57 PM I say if you hit an enemy at the front and then it hits him from behind as it returns to (so it hits twice in one throw) then yes you should get a style point.
