Why is ball not fun? How can it be made to be more fun?

I've not yet played a serious game of ball, but all I've heard is that it's not really that fun.

I'd like to know why it's not fun. Is it a physics related issue? Is it the scoring system? Is it too simple?


If you had no limits, what would you do to create a more fun ball type?

I'd like to try to play it some more, but really no one ever wants to. If no one wants to play it, there's not much point of it being a gametype, just leave the ball in as a universal object gametype thingy, and let moders find a way to make it fun. Of course it's crunch time for the devs, but I'd hate to see an incompleate element left in the game becuase it was promised.

it's a pain in the ass to find that thing just with the radar

make it so if you ma someone or rock them with a ma nade or something they drop the ball

Cause weapons are involved.

Needs to be something to "push" people out of the way/knock the ball out. Bodychecking could do that or a buckler type weapon.

Something to make it non-deathmatchy.

Encourage passing.

The ball physics are too complex and a lil' choppy. It'd be better if it was a big, soft, slow ball with simple physics, like the UT Bombing Run ball.

People are absorbing the specifics of CTF with the new engine. Once that's done, I'm sure lots of people will play it for a break.

the ball needs a throw animation and you need to be able to throw it farther and power up the throw strength faster.
-you should be able to select yoru spawning loadout.
-ability to select the ball by scrolling thru your weapons.
-punting where a player can setup the ball, aim for the punt, and another player comes in to kick by only running into the ball (kick is done automaticly).
-only alow that dagger as a weapon but slows your charactors movement for 3 seconds after use.
-players go down for 15 seconds when hit by dagger.
-outdoor maps should have first team punt the ball across the map to the
other teams side when the other team picks up the ball and runs to the other side.
-jets should be very very limmited to short bursts
-no packs and only light armor

that could probably make the game fun or better or worse for other players.
this makes ball a different game in itself.

Did anyone find a way to bind a key to throw the ball. Switching to the ball first then throwing it is very annoying.

Also, it would be nice to have the one-timer feature back from TR2, along with maybe a one-timer only mode server option that way it's about team work and not just cowboying.

I'll have more thoughts after I do some more play testing.
