D-Sect 08-25-2004, 12:58 PM After seeing every video I could, I'm pretty happy to see how it's going.
Just one curiosity -
Do you think it appeals (or could appeal) to the CS / UT / Quake / FPS-WARgames crowd?
I can't see ALL CS people jumping on it because a lot of those people like the very basic movement, simplicity and "real life" nature of CS.
UT - Hmm.. I could see it being a UT killer.. It looks like UT, but better.
BF42 / SOF / MOH - I dunno - You have the "real life" appeal of these games and that's hard to conquer w/ a "Space Shooter"..
What do you all think?
It looks like it has enough depth to make it a "skill defining game", like if you rocked ass at it you'd probably be good at any other game.
Mass appeal is a little hampered by system specs and stuff, but it looks like it could be a contender..
What do you think? Do you think it competes with CS and stuff?
I always thought T1 would, but I do understand it's a complex game and that may have turned off the Run and Gun crowd.. (rof not R-G)
{A} PR24 08-25-2004, 01:01 PM My guess would be the UT and Quake people would give it a shot. The hardcore BF42, SOF, MOH it seems to be too much of a different game to pull a load from that community.
Got Haggis? 08-25-2004, 01:02 PM I think it will, including members from the bf,moh, cod community.
MakaveliBC 08-25-2004, 01:03 PM That is certainly the crowd they're trying to draw in with the gentler learning curve. But imo this game's a whole lot more complex than most of those you just mentioned, and though I think some people who have never played a tribes game before will get their hands on it and fall in love with the gameplay like many of us have over the past half decade, or find it too difficult to "get into" and go play CS: Source.
Either way no loss to the community, we'll gain some new players, and hopefully avoid (most) those pesky little twerps that are generally bg's.
But then again, I'm just a member so I certainly can't know what I'm talking about. :/
nlhlacrosse 08-25-2004, 01:04 PM Since they're having a prerelease multiplayer demo and it's a solid game, I believe it will draw many players.
Void|deadjawa 08-25-2004, 01:05 PM no
nothing can draw CS players because they are all bots.
edit: but lets review why ppl play CS:
1: Its easy on the system specs
2: Tens of thousands of ppl play it, so there are always good servers
3: ppl like to pretend they are rambo with real weapons
T:V has none of these things, so it will appeal to a niche audience, perhaps a large niche audience, but there is no way it will take a large number of ppl away from their precious cs.
Calder 08-25-2004, 01:06 PM On the TWL power ladder you have a few teams that are from other games, they probably haven't even played the game yet though, so :O
Phoenix Rage: BF Vietnam and Rainbow 6
High Caliber Combat: BF and AA
Hurricane Harold 08-25-2004, 01:07 PM The words "Beta" and "First person shooter" usually tend to draw me in.
Edit: I'm getting a couple of my friends to play the beta, including one BF1942 nut. My brother too, who played AA for a long while and now plays Desert Combat is completely convinced of T:V's worth. Of course I know these two people so I can try to convince them, I don't know about other folks.
The CS crowd is just... ehhhhh...
no, tribes is too scifi for the war/realism crowd of cs/bf/cod/et
cyanide 08-25-2004, 01:11 PM t1/t2 did, i dont see why tribes:vengeance cant
if a game is good, personally, i will play it
it does not have to be tribes or involve skiing
UT yes, maybe quake3 (like me) too but definetly not CS players.
some BF players maybe but i doubt it.
Curious_George 08-25-2004, 01:22 PM With CS:Source just around the corner I don't expect any CS players to make a switch. I think T:V's potential crowd (besides tribes players) is going to be the UT and Quake players. It might draw in some UT players because of the engine alone. And quake players haven't had a new game in years. At least that's who I hope shows up. I'd rather see some skilled players in the form of UT and Quake vets than Battlefield players who just want to drive the tank.
Polaris 08-25-2004, 01:22 PM Its going to be too fast for most people and there is a ton to learn. UT probably will bring some. Some people from various modswill come too. CS, no. Quake, probably some.
many players arent all that "hardcore" with a specific game so players will come from all over. The key with T:V will be that people will need to try it before they buy it. The ad's and cover art are not all that compelling to create and impulse buy or any serious anticipation outside of the existing community.
Polaris 08-25-2004, 01:23 PM On the TWL power ladder you have a few teams that are from other games, they probably haven't even played the game yet though, so :O
Phoenix Rage: BF Vietnam and Rainbow 6
High Caliber Combat: BF and AA
Keep in mind that many teams on those ladders started in Tribes 1 and 2 and have simply moved on, so this may not be that good of an indication.
akula 08-25-2004, 01:25 PM I think UT will supply a lot of T:V players
Wulfen 08-25-2004, 01:27 PM No, I don't think so. Maybe some UT/Quake guys, but the CS/BF/AA realistic crowd won't play it much, I don't think.
If we get a nice-sized competition ladder/league going I'll be happy.
Scorpion 08-25-2004, 01:27 PM nope, barely at the most.
game is too complex with jetting and skiing.
additionally, cs source is coming.
hh_cloud 08-25-2004, 01:28 PM Some of my friends do not like Tribes because they find, Shooting(leading)adapting -generally bullets not hitting the player the instant you click the button, using jetpacks/jumping, all at the same time hard.
I can't get better at CS, theres no room for improvement its simply point click shoot.
Tribes has always given me room to get better and better and I still do now.
nazbot 08-25-2004, 01:29 PM Just like family guy, this game is going to ride mostly on word of mouth. 'Quake with Jetpacks' just doesn't really do it for most people I think.
Think about the most popular games out there:
Tony Hawk: Skateboarding (everyone loves skateboarding)
Spiderman2: You get to be Spidey
Counterstrike: Terrorists vs. Counter-Terrorists
BF1942: WWII
They all have appealing themes. This is compared to Tribes: You have a jetpack. It's not as universally appealing imho. This was sort of spun as 'Freedom of movement' which sounds cooler but I don't know if that gained traction. It was def. a cool way of putting it though.
To me, Tribes multiplayer is more of a 'game game' vs 'concept game' if that makes sense. We play not because it's fun being a guy with a jetpack, but because the game design is so tight. It's similar to chess, where the game mechanics are so fun who cares WHY you're playing, or that that guy is called a knight and that guy is called a King.
The things I think will attract new players are:
The story - if it has any emotional resonance it will draw players ... the FF series has been doing the exact same game for years, and all that's held it up are some great visuals and amazing storylines. Having 'made by the people from SS2' is a huge plus (everyone seemed to LOVE that game). The Tarantino style sounds interesting, and I have faith there will be enough backstory and character development that it's not just another 'ono so and so is evil lets kill him'.
Tribes Community/Word of mouth - We're the 11th largest internet community for games. That's amazing considering we're up against IGN and Gamespy. We are also very vocal about our love for Tribes. Assuming people here like it, there will be an awful lot of 'omg u have to try tribes' posts. I've seen a lot of love for tribes on other boards so those people who might not be intruiged by 'quake with jetpacks' will at least get some pressure to ry it out.
Core gameplay - If people play multiplayer for more than a week they will be hooked. This beats GTA3 or Tony Hawk for depth of gameplay. There are just so many ways to enjoy this game.
Competition - One of the main reasons I stuck with tribes for the first week was I was recruited by a tribe. It was exciting to be given a position to play and playing in a game that acutally mattered for something. Also, IMHO half the fun of tribes was sitting in IRC shooting the shit with my 'friends'. Having an easily accessible competetive ladder will go a long way to keeping people playing for that week while they get 'hooked'. It looks like TW is stepping up and making the competitive side of things easier and more accessable to the newbs.
edit: look at me, I like to talk a lot. ;)
