Will the devs listen...

to the whining newbs?

So when open beta comes, and this forum (or the open beta forum, if there will be a different one) is flooded with newbs crying about this or that because they got owned by this or that, will the devs change the game to suit them? If there's enough of them, it could be a problem. It's happened to other games I've beta'd, and even more games after they come out. Planetside is one example, which was decent in early early beta, and gradually got worse and worse. But we all know who's fault that was. IL-2:FB has suffered from some of the same things in patches, with a vocal minority pursuading the dev team to make major changes which then turned out to trash aspects of the game, and upsetting way more people than it made happy.

People who suck, are misinformed, or just have no concept of the game at it's higher levels whining about balance, and then the devs changing things to suit them, because they are the vocal minority. Ruining balance, gameplay, and hopes of viable competition.

Hope this doesn't happen....

Discuss.

Y'know, I started writing a lengthy reply to this thread, but I've said it all before multiple times. Gameplay is everything, nobody's opinion counts more than anyone else's, and feedback is considered on merit. The end.

I think as long as people whom have played previous Tribes titles keep their voices up, such as in this forum, the devs will listen to them as well.

...at least I hope

I doubt it'll happen after it hits FP, they'll probably take in more bugs than feedback considering the jump in the amount of people. Unless there's just one or two things that're being talked about constantly. Just my guess though.

If someone whines about something, people ignore it. If someone starts a discussion about something, and cites examples from actual gameplay, then that discussion evolves into a good thread. From there it's easy to tell if the topic brought up is a problem or not. If it turns into worthless flaming, the the topic gets locked.

Such is the way of tribes talk, I wouldn't worry about whiners -- but don't confuse them with people who actualy want to discuss something.

I trust you Andrew, and from what I've seen here I think you guys are going to do a DAMN fine job with this game. I haven't been lurking around TT much at all until very recently, so it may have been addressed before, and I'm not very familier yet with the interaction here. The flood of new reactions opinions based on 10 minutes or 1 day of play is what has me a bit worried. I know you guys try to do your best, and I don't envy your job when this open beta happens and these forums get busy.

Lucius: I think you are quite right here, and that discussion is the key. Things seem to stay mostly under control, and the discussions have been good. I can think of many other places where threads on balance etc. get wildly out of control though. Now that I think about it, the discussions here in TT (and in the other older forums on Tribes, whatever they were), have mostly been pretty decent.

I think I'm just used to incessent whining that goes on in the offical forums of other games I've played, and the complete dev silence that seems to ignore but somehow always seems to make changes based on the vocal minority. I think we have enough diehards here though that there will never be an vocal minority that is unopposed.

Hopefully things will go smoothly.

This topic can be translated into "Are the devs going to 'own' and implement the things I agree with, or are they going to 'sux' and do things I disagree with?"

devs: sure haggis, no problem.

"Here's some beer and a few prostitutes."

"Ok you're in the beta."

"Hey there's some stuff that's pretty imbalanced, I think if you'd just . . ."

"You're only here because we want to know that our systems are the only ones capable of playing T2 so shut up and be happy with your UE's."

the excitement level isn't there because the competition scene isn't there yet. it'll come I bet, especially if you're already addicted :)

Open beta is just a marketing gimmick that will last two weeks.

Naw, it's because not enough people have gotten routes down. You sit there on the flag and duel people for 10 minutes, and then somebody comes in at mach 15 and grabs and they're GONE....there's not as much "ohshit I have to pull this perfectly or they're going to grab and cap" every 15 seconds as there was in t1 - yet.
