...just a few things that annoy me...

-Unaffected by gravity
-Doesn't have to wind back up
-Instantly dissapears after use
-The cable passes through the user and looks horrible when its just coming out of his back or side or whatever instead of the gun.. i have no idea how hard it is to change things but i think it would look much better if it was a one handed weapon and the player would dangle from the one arm so the cable wouldnt look so bad, and would be coming out of the gun itself rather than the player model.. i think that would look much much muchhhh better

-Unaffected by gravity
This one I might give you, it would be interesting if it had an arc to it.
-Doesn't have to wind back up
It would be slow and relatively useless if you had to rewind the line after each use.
-Instantly dissapears after use
Graphical design I suppose, perhaps the hook could stay in the surface until you use another one or so?

This would probably be so much more work to code and animate then it is worth. It would be neat, but realistically I don't think it is worth the effort, you would have to make it so the player model does flips and such while you are swinging.

its affected by gravity. trust me.

I think he means the hook when you shoot it.

hey, i know this is unrelated, but anyone in the beta, feedback would be appreciated. especially you, jodo :p

it looks hard to hit stuff with the grappler. what if you shoot past an object that you want to grapple on but as the hook is shot out you are moving and your shot intersects the object, does the grapple retract? does it keep going? or do you latch on to the thing your hook string went past.

i said that horridly, but if it could be comprehended and asnwered, it would be appreciated.

Well, the hook is the only part that matters for grappling, so if you miss your shot with the hook, the grapple just shoots off into nothing and you have to shoot again.

I support anything that Jodo has to say about the grapple, because he owns with it.

ok fair point i guess, talk to ed or kp. the spec was for it to shoot out straight ahead... i doubt this will be changed though.

why specifically is it a good idea for the grappler projectile to have an arc? just curious...

You wouldnt want the disc to have an arc would ya? Why would you want the grabbler to?

Well, when an object is shot out at such force, it goes in a straight line regardless of gravity :)

well that's just not true..everything falls at the same rate (ignoring air resistance). something going faster will just travel farther in the given time.

Indeed, it's shot out really fast and retracts really fast then

Yep, thats how we have to see it. I don't see a point in the hook being affected by gravity imo, it would only be useful if our bodies can be turned and flung around. Plus, the physics required to work the animation/swinging would probably give experimental (gaffer) a huge ass headache. I'm sure he's had enough of those :P

I think that anyone who read DJ's post and learned physics in school is bashing their heads against the monitor right now.

having an arc would be horrible....remember the weapons are supposed to be *fun* to use.

And the rate at which the grappler flies, having a drop on it wouldn't change it enough to bother with it.

-crap-

doesn't that imply that the mortar isn't 'fun'?

but the mortar is completely different than the grappler.

true, I was just pointing out the generalization, I have no opinion on the issue :P
