Big Monkey 08-02-2004, 10:21 AM From what I've read...many people are saying they expect teams to be 7vs7, 8vs8 etc....
Is 10vs10 too much or what? With teams of 7 or 8, there will be plenty I know, and I like that aspect..but I'm not sure if it is enough to make it interesting. T1 had 10 man teams, and I would think that is what people would want again.
Are the maps that small?
I've played 7vs7 in T2, and it is no where near as fun as the larger team competitions. Plus with small sizes like that, it makes it extremely difficult for an offense of 3 or 4 to break a turtle should the other team decide its cool to jump in a vehicle/Heavy with Shield pack in their base after they are up.
What's the deal?
The beta maps are no bigger than Raindance/Damnation. If they're all of similar size, I'd say 10 is pushing the limit.
Father Ruckus 08-02-2004, 10:49 AM having played in a 10v10 and 12v12 pub....its too many people. Dont really see it being diff in comp. 8v8 is ideal
Big Monkey 08-02-2004, 10:56 AM Wow!
OK well this certainly changes my expectations of the game.
It's definately something to think about competition wise and how teams will look in T:V.
If maps are all going to be that size and not much bigger, then I suppose 8vs8 will probably be a good number.
This will also render LOTS of more teams on their respective ladders, and I love that aspect.
With only 8 positions to fill, recruiting will become very interesting. I'm curious to see the rosters once the ladders are opened.
This also means that there will be a crapload of pubs if the server limits stay at say 20 or less.
Sounds exciting!
how's playing raindance or damnation with 10 man too much?
i've always played small ladders for t2 like the 7 man along with the bigger 14/10 man etc, and its like playing 2 diff games, one offers way more choices and strategies and more teamwork, not 2 mention more maps, since the small ladders can only play on damn small maps like damnation, dbx.
i dont know, i just personaly feel that the less people there are, the less choises there are and the game becomes repetative.
i think that not having a competition for teamsizes bigger then 8 will make the game die much faster, i dont remember any teams from t2 7 man ladders for any mod, staying on the ladder for more then a few months(roughly speaking) especially at the top.
i think that 8v8 will be fun and successful, but i hope that those who want bigger things, maps permitting, can have 10 man or even 12 man, if maps are big enough ladder.
I didn't say 10 men were too much, I said 10 men were pushing the limit. I wouldn't want to play RD/Damnation and the like with more than 10 people per team.
Disciple 08-02-2004, 01:32 PM With the way Heavy Offense works in T:V I wouldn't worry about not being able to break a turtle. Especially if you can park the Buggy right by the enemies base then continue to spit out heavies like crazy
Big Monkey 08-02-2004, 02:07 PM No clue there Disciple.
I've not played the game. I also haven't seen any teams say that they have had a comp style match played yet.
If 8vs8 is the norm, then I'm OK with it. I just thought I had read somewhere that the game was designed with 10vs10 in mind and that is what I was expecting.
EViL JiM 08-02-2004, 02:14 PM There is a strong tendency to think that bigger and more is better. But think about the strains on maintaining and training large competitive teams. Top ten teams have no end to people who would like to join (Would you like to play for the Yankees or Mariners?) But most teams have to work hard on community and camaradery to keep it together. I think maps geared for smaller teams will be a boon to this game.
I would like to see 9 v 9 or 10 v 10. I think some maps may be too big for 8 v 8, and we may have to remove some maps.. No more than 10 though. I like it being a little more hectic though.

VirDT 08-02-2004, 02:35 PM Team Size will be whatever the community decides it will be, at least that's the way it will be on twl.
Big Monkey 08-02-2004, 02:40 PM Well Vir you seem to have some inside knowledge of TWL with your connections to TRD, so let me ask you this.
If the community will be deciding, assuming there will be a vote posted to reach this decision, when exactly will TWL be posting this vote? Will it be after the open beta begins? Or will TWL wait till the game is actually released?
Also, will the ladder open up on release, afterwards, or maybe a beta ladder?
VirDT 08-02-2004, 02:45 PM There will be a vote, Falhawk would know the rest better then anyone else.
Falhawk 08-02-2004, 02:49 PM hello thar, vir is correct, ultimately the community will decide team sizes. We're going to use the open beta to get this worked out. We're most likely going to have a power ladder and a regular ladder for open beta. The power ladder lets team decide on team sizes per match.
As for the other ladder we're kind of torn. See I think that 8v8 plays really well, but I don't think that 10v10 is horrible either. We may open the ladder as 8v8, run it for a few weeks like that, and then switch it to 10v10 for a few weeks. That way people can make informed decisions.
We're going to be opening signups for the beta ladders soon I think. Probably whenever the FP beta comes out we'll open the signups.
Big Monkey 08-02-2004, 02:52 PM I don't intend to pay the 7 or 8 bux they want to get it a week early, unless FP has other things that I want to DL...and I doubt they have any hot latina vids available.
Do you mean you are going to open the sign-ups for the week early guys, or for everyone? I don't want to be behind a week :(

I really do hope you do this, Fal. Being a part of other ladders on there that did NOT take community input, I hope that we all have a say in teamsizes and settings and all. I would hope that's the case on TW as well.

Some like the idea of 4 D 5 O, or you can run a MF or dedicated ball pilot. Lot of options.
Big Monkey 08-02-2004, 03:09 PM Welp, my attempt at poking fun at your odd number failed miserably.
I have failed to bring the funnay.
