[T|V] 64 Bit CPU/ Win 64 BetaEViL JiM 08-01-2004, 02:44 PM After Slashdot.org linked this article. http://www.viperlair.com/reviews/cpu_mobo/amd/s754/3000/ The question arises.. what are the issues of gaming (in particular.. tribes Vengence) on a 64 bit system? ZOD 08-01-2004, 04:26 PM I would assume no issues, it will just run 32bit. No idea if it's been tested on XP64 beta. Che'lu 08-01-2004, 04:39 PM I've tried the Win64 beta for a while. Although I dont have T:V beta (yet), I've tried running T2 and FarCry on it and had no issues with either game. Keep in mind, no issues with either game only. MS did not offer any type of support for the beta version, so updating drivers were practically impossible. The only driver I could find was for my ATI 9800XT (beta too). I could not Nvidia Chipset drivers, so I had no sound. System specs are: AMD64 3400+ Gigabyte GA-K8NNXP NForce3 150 chipset Mobo 1024 MB PC3200 DDR ATI 9800XT 256 On average, I had around 150-250 fps on T2. I was supprised it ran without getting the occasional UE thinking it would because of driver issues. I couldn't tell what my fps was with FarCry, but the game ran smoothly. Awesome graphics I might add. Overall, I was dissappointed because I couldnt get any sound. The other thing was I had to do a fresh install witht the beta version of Win64. Luckly, I had an extra HD lying around to install it on. Hopefully, MS will release Win64 soon (with support). I'm definately gonna make the switch on its release. FastAttack 08-01-2004, 05:10 PM I just got a A64 3200+ , I want for sure to use its potential in the 64 bit world. I wonder if the standalone servers will have the ability to run in 64 bit mode? :) Got Haggis? 08-01-2004, 07:32 PM am i missing something somehwere? i don't think there is a 64-bit version of T:V edit: oops misunderstood your question....i assume it would just run in 32bit mode? Beren 08-01-2004, 07:43 PM I am sure someone at IG/Sierra QA/Closed Beta/TWS runs a 64 bit system and any issues have been worked out and its fine. NeutralX2 08-01-2004, 08:26 PM Do 32bit games run slower in a 64bit enviroment? I would assume they do. ViRGE 08-01-2004, 10:16 PM Do 32bit games run slower in a 64bit enviroment? I would assume they do.So far they've varied between the same speed and slightly slower, although there's the possibility for a slight pickup due to the OS and drivers having access to the other 8 registers. Got Haggis? 08-02-2004, 10:15 AM right now the 64-bit graphics card drivers from both nvidia and ATI suck ass. EViL JiM 08-02-2004, 01:20 PM Thanks for the info for the ignorant.. I was thinking that a 64 bit system would be a good upgrade. But it looks like it is still too imature a technology (In-so-far as MS software and drivers aer concerned.) Got Haggis? 08-02-2004, 01:35 PM well, the amd64 processors are still great for games, even running in 32 bit mode ViRGE 08-02-2004, 04:08 PM Thanks for the info for the ignorant.. I was thinking that a 64 bit system would be a good upgrade. But it looks like it is still too imature a technology (In-so-far as MS software and drivers aer concerned.)Remember, everything we're basing this off of is an OS that's nearly a year old at the core. I think we're going to see some major improvements with the next beta. Beren 08-03-2004, 06:21 PM Thanks for the info for the ignorant.. I was thinking that a 64 bit system would be a good upgrade. But it looks like it is still too imature a technology (In-so-far as MS software and drivers aer concerned.) If the main thing you need the power for is games get a 64, they give the best performance by quite a margin. | ||
