Skiing: Rebound

So I've been one of the people critical of the current skiing system, as I consider myself a fairly decent skier in T1/T2, but the T:V skiing just caused way too much random damage and movement. Thrax, in his delicate grace, had all but called us retarded, saying he and others had no problem with it at all, to the point that it almost sounded like we retards were playing a different game.

What Thrax had also said, though, and I didn't listen, is to rebind your spacebar to just Ski and leave your right-click as Jump/Jet. I figured that that might help, but since I'm a very big advocate of playing with default keymaps (especially during something like the beta), I sort of ignored it.

That was a mistake. The difference between skiing feeling random and punative and skiing feeling fun and free was that rebind. So word up. If you've been having problems skiing, rebind those keys and I think you'll find it's a lot better. Plus, if you're a T1/T2 vet, you're pretty much trained to hit Space -> Right Mouse in quick succession anyway, so just jumping around your base doesn't feel terribly different anyway.

But it does beg the question, in T:V's newbie-friendly design ethic (one I totally support, fwiw), maybe the default bind shouldn't be the one that makes skiing harder. I understand newbloods will be coming from games that have space bound as jump, but maybe it would be better to teach them, right out of the gate, that T:V is a game where skiing is as important as jumping, or moreso really.

Just an idea, but something I felt worth mentioning, obvs. The rebinding really changed how I felt about my mobility in T:V. I daresay that between the rebind and the grappler I am now faster and able to move in more interesting vectors than I ever could in T1/T2. Now if the ground control could just be tweaked a little we'd be all superpants.

I'll remember that when open beta comes out. ;)

Awesome! I'm very glad to hear this. I've long since been concerned with the problems with skiing. I can't wait to try it out myself! Appreciate your tip and suggestion as it sounds that this will fix a problem for many people.

I'm confused as to how this makes skiing easier. Wasn't space bound to ski already?

By default, space is bound to Ski/Jump and right-mouse is bound to Jet/Jump. The rebind changes space to Ski alone.

Wouldn't this be considered a bug? You should only jump when you first press down the button, then ski when held down. If it does something else, then something is wrong. :o

yea I don't really get it either :o

I don't like this method. It improves skiing, but you have a whole new key to mess with.

Are you completely retarded?

You rebind space to ski, unless you weren't using space at all before and just jump/jetting around how is this a new key?

btw holding down w + ski seems to be the same problem, you get random bits where you start walking so you lose speed all the time.

I just tried it and skiing does feel better... and no there isn't a whole new key to mess with. By instinct everyone usually hits jump and jetpack together anyway, so it doesn't mess anything up in that aspect. The result of the rebind is a smoother and faster feeling ski.

However, it STILL makes that "clunk" noise all the time while you're skiing. I think some sort of check should be implemented to remove the impact sound from minor impacts during skiing. Sound is part of making the skiing feel smoother as well, and having just the bristling noise minus the clunk that you hear when you hit a bump (even a minor one) would certainly improve that experience.

binding jump/jet as a function is cool

i like it

I have been using that setup for a while. I don't think it is necessarily easier to ski in this method, it is just a lot easier to go faster. The other method is still necessary for people to start out on, as space bar being jump is something that people are used to.

Is there a Jet only button? And is there a button that works like in T2(First jump, then start skiing)?

That Jump-Jet thing sounds a little akward, takes a little control out of the movement. Well, ill get used to it... ;)

You can make it Jet only if you want, and by default the spacebar is jump and ski.

Yeah, that does tend to break the flow.
But that swoosh sound is awesome when you get it going.

Are you fucking retarded? Don't assume you know my current setup.

For me( this doesn't apply to fanboy retards I guess ), if I were to seperate jump / ski ( yes that's 2 different states, 2 different binds for the incest fanboys ), I would have what?, what's that? 2 seperate keys bound to 2 seperate functions!

And for me( again this doesn't seem to apply to fanboy retards ), this is a problem and a hassle.

When do you need to jump without jetting? I don't think I've ever needed to do that in 4 years of playing T1/T2.

If your not a "fan" boy are you a "fan" girl, or are you just some retard thats on a "fan" site because it has no friends?

Oh and to stay on topic use the Jump+Jet button.

I know you never did that in the 4 years of playing T1 / T2 :roller:

I've skiied manually, without scripts, for the past 5 years. I guess it's only natural? It's your opinion that matters.
