I am just wondering if they are going to include this, so if the server has a specific team skin it uses, then when the players are joining, and I am guessing there would be a setting to enable/disable this, they can download the skinset/s from the server. This would also go with iff's or any skin thats custom.
Not sure if this has been answered officially from the crew or not.
Breadman86 07-17-2004, 09:30 PM I dont' think so, no, sorry. It's all default skins from what I heard and nothing else, just to simplify things.
Then again I've been known to be wrong.
Amadeus 07-18-2004, 05:40 AM They are including a skinning tutorial iirc. What sense would that make if you couldn't replace any of te skins?
no no no. I am asking if the server is running custom skins, player, logos on buildings, iffs etc... if the players will be able to download them when connecting ? The server would of course have to have the files for others to download them, and then there be something in the players config where they can either choose to download the custom skins the server might be running or use the defaults. Thats all.
Amadeus 07-18-2004, 11:32 AM I don't think it would be a popular feature. The majority of people won't volunteerily increase their map load times to get some skins of unknown quality.

You have to be kidding on the map load time ??? First off, the devs pretty much stated that this would be BROAD BAND ONLY. There for most servers, good ones anyway, will have NO problem sending people the files, if its 1-2 megs, it would take no more then 10-20 secs to load, if that. So I dont think connection would be an issue. If the files each are given a special name, and stored in a tempskins folder for the servers, then yea, that should work just fine. I think two things are needed tho.
1st, it should be a client side option on whether or not to download the servers custom skins.
2nd, it should keep the files in a temp folder so the client doesnt have to download any custom skins every time they connect to the server, but if the server updates, then they just download those files. It should also maybe create a temp folder for each server, sorta like ie does with each website somewhat.
Anyways, thats it :)
Rigel 07-18-2004, 09:41 PM Lets make it like CS!!!!
Sorry, but hearing "Ultra Kill" is not worth adding 20 extra seconds. Gay idea.

The skin i did for the contest is 1.12mb (All 6 files compressed). I am sure whatever archive they use will be of similar size for the game.
Keep in mind though a fullskinset for both sexes and all 3 armors would be 6.7mb per set.
Azn_Essence 07-19-2004, 01:30 AM I rather a skinning site have a 50mb skin pack every month or so.

Which is slightly more than 20 megs for all three sets, which, on my 56 KB/s connection would take 6 minutes to download. And they might all look like crap.
Not a chance.
Still think it should be a client side option. Some servers may only make one set of skins, or only change flags, iff's, logos, or something small. I know a 1 meg file on our T1 server takes about 3-4 secs to download so I really wouldnt mind a 6-10 meg download as long as its just once :) If they could use a compressed format, like zip or whatever and then have it extract the files, it could even take less time to download ;). These are just some ideas tho.
Like, have a zip of the files called custom skins. Also have the skins in the server skin folder, and or have them named in the serverprefs config file. Maybe have a link to the skins zip they will need on the server, then if the client selects to download the file, it will create a server folder name in a temp skin folder and then unzip the files it downloads there. Nice and simple huh ???
Zipped, i would imagine a complete skin set for 2 teams, custom logos, flags, iffs would prol run about 5-8 megs. If done right, a one time download, file saving, it should not be a problem whatsoever for people who SELECT to do this to do it. I would.
