Tried to do up a texture sample of "black" chainmail... this is a bit big (resolution wise...) but is as close as I could come in 20 minutes or so...

The trick with black chainmail is all you're going to see of it is highlights, unless you have a lighter colored backing behind it. Just seeing the highlights won't give the impression of chainmail... or not that I can see.

That's not bad. I was thinking more along the lines of ringmail, actually.

... or Scale Mail.

But there are plenty of existing xMail textures out there to give us a base to build on.

If they can do it with checkboard mesh, there's no reason we shouldn't be able to duplicate it with a ringmail/chainmail pattern.

eff, i hate drawing chain mail...how about thin layered plates.... kinda like Colossus from X-men?
Tacky, we're still in a concept phase. I wouldn't worry about doing intricately detailed mail textures right now. We'll get to that further down, when we've got some actual models to skin.

And if you weren't drawing rings or chains, you'd be doing tiny cross-hatches or thread patterns to resemble what's already being used. :p

I think that's what Data is telling you to do...
Just draw it as if it were a stiff cloth and stick a little arrow next to it saying "chainmail". Leave the actual detail of the small stuff up to the skinners later on.

The plate thing would be cool, but you have to remember that the reason you have unplated areas in the other models is because those are the parts that move when it animates. You can't diverge too far from the other models in that respect.

Scale mail would work though, as long as it's small enough to appear flexible.

Yeah, I think that's what he uses.
Then he scans it in and adjusts the levels in Photoshop usually.

Yeah i don't exactly have a scanner. I have a digital camera and use a 10c HB2 pencil.

It comes out something like this usualy:

i use usually what i can find around the house. usually it's a regular ink pen or a pencil crayon or a graphite pencil. some times it coffee stains. like neek said, i usually clean it up in photoshop. before showing it off.

i used my my tacky-design and added the new logos. It may look shitty because the reflection from the flash on the lead makes some spots unviewable
