Vermouth 05-17-2004, 02:29 PM *shrug*, i don't absolutely whore this forum, but i can't recall ever seeing a reasonable explanation in any of the threads for any of the differences except maybe a line or two from KP.
as far as saying a gameplay element is a good idea or bad idea, i think it's fairly premature to give any opinions for those of us that haven't even played it yet.
Thrax Panda 05-17-2004, 02:32 PM i can see how you can get sick of people giving you crap all the time, but that's no reason to be insulting and dismissive to people that make polite and rational posts.Sorry. I honestly don't have time to try to rationalize every decision to everybody who asks, polite or not. Many of the answers are in threads here. If you're unwilling to search for them then I'm afraid you'll just have to accept "it's different, get over it" as my reasoning for all of them.
Shoddy 05-17-2004, 02:36 PM 2) link me up to the explanations please (is this on a page or scattered throughout the threads?)
What were you wanting explanations for?
Mine-disk: it's counterintuitive that a mine should be used in this fashion.
Floaty physics: sounds like, while they've spent a lot of time on the physics *mechanisms* and have a first approximation of the various parameters, they haven't necessarily tuned it to where they are entirely happy with it yet.
Medium vs. Light: mediums where underused before, particularly in T1
I'm extrapolating a bit here, but I don't think their process in general is "keep everything as it is from T1 unless there's an overwhelming reason to mess with it". Instead I think it's something like starting with what they think are the core aspects of Tribes, and then throwing all the other T1 & T2 stuff in a bucket along with a bunch of fresh ideas, and then for each thing in the bucket asking "Is this thing fun? Is it intuitive for new players? Does it add to the skill depth so it can help keep good players interested? Does it add enough to the game to warrant it's inclusion? Can it be combined with something else? Are there ways we can streamline it or do more with it?" etc. Some things make the cut, some things don't.
LoVer 05-17-2004, 02:40 PM After seeing a post like this it's not to hard to see the stubborness that fuels mush's bad review of Vengeance. I'm much more optimistic about this game after reading Col's review. What the vast majority of the community wants is a complex and good game that is appealing to a large audience while still being difficult to master, not t1 or t2 all over again.
Vermouth 05-17-2004, 02:41 PM Sorry. I honestly don't have time to try to rationalize every decision to everybody who asks, polite or not. Many of the answers are in threads here. fair enough.
nuff said 05-17-2004, 02:43 PM Because its based of Tribes
Thrax Panda 05-17-2004, 02:45 PM Check out the Dev Tracker (http://www.tribalwar.com/forums/devtracker.php). If you search thru the posts by KP, Experimental, MrFish, and me, along with whatever keyword you're looking for, you should find most of your answers (leave me to last in your search, as 90% of what I post here is fluff, and any hits you get from the other three are likely to be pertinent).
Egonomics 05-17-2004, 03:09 PM *shrug*, i don't absolutely whore this forum, but i can't recall ever seeing a reasonable explanation in any of the threads for any of the differences except maybe a line or two from KP..
A line or two? A line or two? There are 141 pages in the dev tracker, making for a total of 2820(+2) posts. What exactly do you think those posts contain?
stasis 05-17-2004, 03:13 PM Wrong. It's the 13th installment in a line of games:
Stellar 7
that game was fudgeing wicked, my dad and i used to play that when i was like in 3rd grade (and have to trade seats back before mp)
i think i still have the cd from some old-school compilation pack it was in :d
ZProtoss 05-17-2004, 03:18 PM Reality check here. While I have faith that many *many* gameplay issues will be solved in whatever closed testing goes on before open beta, you're out of your tree if you think major changes or tweaks will come easily in an open beta format. Once you're at open beta, it's not just tw or smart players giving feedback, we'll be outnumbered 20 to 1 or more by the new players to the game. Who will take the first OB build in regards to physics as the gospel. Good luck changing it when you'll have tons upon tons of people complaining that it isn't the same as the first build and why the first build was superior (first thing *THEY* played, even if it might suck).
So in terms of major changes, it's very unlikely you'll see them in OB on a gameplay scale. You'll see alot of minor tweaking, and *minor* changes, but they won't be the level like you're imagining flat. Far too many people will complain and become 10x as irate as you think TW people will be, with *way* more numbers to back them up. Whatever OB comes out is going to resemble the final product fairly closely in regards to physics and most major things, like just about every other OB these days.
The most important thing to remember of all though flat on this. In an open beta, you cannot effectively glean specific feedback from your testers, because of the sheer volume of the feedback. You can grab general vibes that alot of the tester population has, and work on those, but getting major detailed changes in the most tender area of the game is something that's very difficult to do at that point.
The large bulk of gameplay correcting and physics changes are going to go on between now and OB in a controlled closed testing format where you can get specific feedback from an ideal group of players that's small enough to keep managable, but larger than QA (and more experienced in the issues they might be looking at).
OPEN BETA - chill
If Irrational pulls a QIX during beta, then we should be irate until then, relax.

mostly a $hit load of sarcasm by Thrax...why? wtf do you think they contain?

i said i don't absolutely whore this forum (meaning Tribes Talk), not the dev tracker.
btw, thanks for the link thrax.
KillerONE 05-17-2004, 03:40 PM In all fairness, Graham, the Dev Team has gone over many times why many of the changes were made. I just think there's only so many times a person can hear outrage from people disliking change to their precious game before you get kind of sick of it..
Definately.
Egonomics 05-17-2004, 03:47 PM mostly a $hit load of sarcasm by Thrax...why? wtf do you think they contain?
Uh, informative posts about an upcoming game? Yeah, you can really blame Thrax for having to slam his head into a brick wall whenever he's asked to repeat himself for the hundredth time. How inconsiderate of him. I mean, we'd all be much better off having no developer input whatsoever, as opposed to a wealth of useful information with an occasional blurb here and there. I guess I just can't come to grips with the idea that anyone could possibly become a bit jaded 'round these friendly waters.

Thrax Panda 05-17-2004, 04:32 PM I was under the impression that TW was suffering a sarcasm shortage. I was just trying to help.

It's a rhythmic dance, you see.
Then leave. It is a new game, it is not T1 or T2, and if that concept is beyond you then I apologize, but it doesn't change facts. New Engine + New weapons + New packs + New deployables + New vehicles + New (better) physics = New Game. Trying to make that all equal the same old thing would not just be impossible, it would be stupid and pointless.
The fact that you were unable to ski for shazbot in your 15 minutes of playing the game is not an indictment of the game, only your ability to adapt to anything new.
boom! sew that! :sunny:
