In before lock.

When was that confirmed? I thought the server was still a possibility. I knew no client, but no server too?

Got Haggis?

I thought that I read someplace that a linux server was almost certain.....just no linux client.

I don't know if I'd say it was certain....

When I first asked about it the answer was that there were no plans for a linux server. Some people freaked when that was announced so I went back to Thrax to get a confirmation on that. The answer then became "no comment"

Found this in the Dev Tracker

I hate to do this, but let me just correct this statement.

We are agressively looking into building a Linux version of the server. This is something that we truly want to provide to the community. Unfortunately there is a measurable chance that some of the middleware which we license will not work in a Linux environment. If that middleware is required by the server then we will not be able to provide a Linux server. We are taking whatever reasonable precautions we can to insure that we are not locked out of the Linux server market, but I can’t make any guarantees at this time.

omfg, no linux servers? it would be terrible to the whole community (clan servers e.g.). linux servers are simply cheaper (not to mention faster at all ;)) and still well payable for smaller tribes. reconsider it ig (or at any rate try to implement it please!)

Gosh that would be a big pain in the ass. I hope they can at least offer a solution some time after T:V's release in case it's a temporal concern.

what did microsoft give you guys a shazbotload of money or something? There are a variety of technical reasons for it (possibly) being impossible to do a Linux server. We are looking at ways to get around those, and we will do a Linux server if possible. There is no possibility of a Linux client, and a 100% chance of locking the thread if people dwell on that fact. The main issue is that Karma Havok is not available for Linux.

why would you need the physics engine on the server? I don't program so I really don't know, but to me that would seem a client side thing....

Wasn't Karma scrapped for Havok? Or is Karma still used in some instances?

The server does all the real physics stuff. If the clients did the whole physics work by themselves, each client might create a different view of the world. Well, I'm sure you can figure out why that's bad. :p

I also hope one gets released!

If Karma's the default UT physics engine than it is being used... to make weapons fall to the ground.

Paging experimental... experimental, come in... come in, experimental... WTF IS KARMA STILL USED FOR?

Well if Karma is only being used for object like weapons falling to the ground couldn't they make the Havok engine do that pretty easily?

Probably at the very bottom of the list of priorities (if it's even on it).

I see, maybe it would be good to have a Linux server if possible after the game is released if they don't want to take up development time right now. I think that Linux Gaming Servers are pretty popular and it might be a good feature to have for the community if possible.

Anyways, I'd still play the game even if it's Win server only =)

With all kinda of Linux users and developers being sued by SUN, I dunno if porting things over is such a good idea. I mean it is very possible that Linux will no longer be free in the near future depending on how SUNs lawsuits turn out.
